First Amp, could use some help

Sign in to disble this ad
So I have been looking locally for an amp and I have seen a couple. I am just looking for a practice/ small amp for now. It will mostly be used for practice and maybe in a couple months to practice with my two friends who have guitars.

The amps I have found are:

Crate BX 100
PEavey Basic 60
Ibanez SW65

What are the opinions on these and are they a good starter amp? Thanks for any help!

Add a fender rumble bass 100 to the list. So which one should I go for?

For a starter amp you can get a lot for $250 $300 max....I would start looking at Guitar center Ads....and the other big stores....Labor Day Weekend is coming shortly so they will be a lot of sales....I had a Fender Rumble 60 amp...$249 its now discontinued but the lower priced Fender combo amps should be more than enough to get you started.....

Thanks for the info. The Fender Rumblebass is going for 100. So I think it is a pretty good deal.

Oops I forgot to add a Peavey Studio Pro 112 Transtube Series. Someone is selling it for 75. So are any of these such good deals that I should jump on right away?

Thanks for the suggestion. I think as of right now, I am down to either the Fender Rumble Bass 100 or the Peavey Pro 112 (it is the red stripe one with the Delta sign if that makes a difference).

Take your time....and try out as many as possible. Keep an eye on the Daily Deals on the music store websites. Also, GC has a used site with lots of items.

I prefer the head/cab configuration over the combo. It allowed me to spend a little more on the cab than the head, in the begining(wanted to spend about $300--got the head for $92 and cab for $230). That way, I could take my time and find a better sounding head unit at a later time, when I have some money saved. I went with an Aguilar cab...cause I knew what brand I wanted to stick with. The GS112 is very portable and has an excellent sound. I highly recommend it.

I also saw alot of Ampeg combos when I was shopping. I considered either the 12 or 15 inch unit.

You can't go wrong with the SW65. I have an SW35 that I've been using for a couple of years. So far all my Ibanez gear is very good.

Yea the SW65 is at a really good price. But the reviews seem to say that it isn't that loud or the sounds isn't great. But since you have first hand experience, I will take your word :-).

That is a guitar amp! Not something you'd want as your only bass amp

I just checked the GC used site...and there is a ton to choose from. Only bad thing is that they charge you tax and shipping, unless you find one close.

I saw a nice GK 250-head and 15in cab in the Austin C.List today. Was asking $200.

How big a system do you think you will need? 10w-50w-100w?

Well I was looking to spend around 150-200 locally, as to save on shipping and taxes. I have found quite a couple locally at very good prices. I know shippin on these things is brutal lol.

I have used the fender 100 with a loud band at their practice space. It holds it's own. Probably easy to resell and get your money back if you upgrade.
