| I really don't think you're an idiot, but since you are requesting the simplest and first things to check; I would:
Make sure the volume on your bass is up. We've all done it.
Check and make sure all your cables are plugged into the right hole. Silly I know, but I cross my cables all the time with my pedals. We've all done this too.
Check to make sure the conections in your cable jacks haven't come loose. Wiggle the cable and listen for intermediate sound and crackle. Cables wear out.
Is your bass active? If so, make sure your battery is good.
Good luck. I hope I didn't offend you by the simplicity of my answer, but those are always the first things I check and normally one or more are the reason for no sound.
