First try with a 400+: impressed

My band shares a rehearsal space with another group, and I took a few lessons from the bassist of this band in the past. He recently switched from an Eden rig to a 400+ into SVT cabinets (210/115). While I have enjoyed his playing live, he uses a monstrous amount of effects, so I can't say that I found his tone particularly interesting or unique. At any rate, last night I played through his rig for a few hours, with the effects bypassed. I have very little experience with tube heads, minus the usual music store noodling. The first thing that struck me about this rig was that the notes had some serious authority. My usual 'sound' is more along the lines of being a bit sterile: I use modern-voiced amps and cabinets; someone at a show recently called my bass sound "polite". Not so the Mesa/Ampeg combo. Big, girthy, really round, and just plain great soundin'. I plugged into my own rig a few times during the session and it sounded pretty lifeless by comparison, EQs flat on either setup. One of the coolest things about the Mesa setup was that as the volume increased, it seemed to sound even better, but it still sounded very good at low volumes. I'm not in the financial position to simply switch to another rig, but the 400+ just became a lot more interesting to me. I recently bought a used PH212, and got to thinking that another one of those with a 400+ would be teh sex for a metal band. Great, now I have to wipe the sweat off my forehead...

I love mine, its the best bass sound I've ever had. You can find them pretty cheap used... I got mine for well under $1000. Plus if you hang on to it it could very well increase in value.

Are you sure the EQ was flat on the Mesa?

Most 400+ owners don't know what flat is on their own amps.

No, I'm not sure. The graphic EQ was flat, but the mids were set at 4, bass at 4, and treble at 5. What would the settings be for flat on this amp? If they are significantly different from what I tried, I would like to have another go. Thanks.

Flat would be roughly 2-10-2, with none of the knobs pulled. Also, keep in mind that each of the inputs also sound different and you can feed both inputs together for yet a third sound.

Really. Ok, thanks for that. I didn't experiment much with Channel 2, but I will next time. Cheers.

I like mine (bass 400) around 5-5-5. Mid cranked may be "flat" in theory but some of us find it gets too harsh like that.

I'm pretty hooked on bass & treble knobs pulled out. IME they both add some nice presence that's hard to get with the traditional "Fender" tone stack. (Also prefer the channel gain pulled out - haven't tried both inputs at once yet. And I've never even looked at the graphic! )

It's not always the most intuitive control scheme. But I've had some ridiculously good tone nights with the Mesa. Not too heavy or bulky either (I think my old pre + power rack was more unwieldy).

400+ is my jam. Been playing one as my main head for... lets see... almost 5 years? Absolutely impressed every time I plug in. Did a few preamp tube swaps to settle on a good combo and installed an adjustable bias to get things cooking a little more. I run both inputs via Y-cable and my usual settings are mids-10 bass-3 treble-4 and both inputs between 7 and 8 through an Ampeg 810. Master hits 2 for practice and maaaaaaybe 4 for shows. And we are an effin' loud three piece. Playing Mesa powerhouse cabs I ran the treble at 0 (a slight cut on this head) as they have more high end. And sound better IMO. Wish I owned one ! Probably my favorite all tube head overall although I really enjoy the 300T as well. A good SVT is a different beast and will never have the aggressiveness that I can pull out of my 400+. Only complaint would be.... I've blown a few phase inverter tubes in this head. I think that jacking up the bias is to blame and I went through a JJ every 2 months until I put the stock (Chinese) tube back in. So far so good.
