Just picked up a mesa 400. I want to test it but I only have studio monitors. I know tube amps need a cab load so I am assuming I have no safe way to test it. Is this the case or am I good to see if it powers up?

Pull the power valves out and you can power up, and test the sockets for the appropriate voltages.

Take it with you to Guitar Center and tell them you're just there "trying out a cab", and you want to hear it with your head.

Great idea, and not really a "scam."
While testing it, you can get an idea of how it sounds with some good cabs that you have not yet tried. GC wants you to do this, no?

You could use your studio monitors as a speaker load, but don't try playing your bass through them unless you don't like them........but you know you are going to play anyway, so as above go to a GC near you
