Fixing up an old cab?

Sign in to disble this ad
I got an old Peavey 2-15 cab and while it looks pretty good to be over 30 years old, I am a sucker for equipment that matches. How would you remove tolex from particle board anyway? I imagine big chunks coming off as you try to reomve it. Should I leave cab as is (a couple of nicks, not too bad a shape) and mismatch my gear? Should I put some duct tape on it and call it a day? Or should I take a chance, remove the tolex, and paint it with duratex? I imagine the particle board would soak it up like a towel.

Thanks for advice TB.

What would you do?

I would leave it alone. Particle board is pretty delicate. Its road warn the right way. Just enjoy it as it is, or replace it.

If the cab's in overall good shape, i'd leave it alone (except for possible speaker replacement). Reason being, to preserve the originality. Not that it's a cherished collectible like a pre-CBS Fender, but there are a lot of old Peavey fans out there that would pay more for it whenever you decide to sell it.

When I bought my GK cabs they had gray carpet-like covering on them. They attracted a lot of dust and pet hair. I stripped the carpet off and refinished the cabs with Duplicolor Truck Bedliner. They came out great. No more crap getting stuck to them, it looks like tolex and the finish is indestructible. I would recommend doing that if you do not like the way your cab looks.

Another thing; You didn't say what you would like to match it to, and looking at your profile, I couldn't tell.

Removing Tolex can pull off some chunks of the wood or MDF, if done hurriedly. If you don't like the grill, you can always build one to suit your taste, or match some other gear.

If you use a heat gun you usually do not have a problem removing the tolex.

This would be painted a custom green color (think green amps) to match my custom rack case.

Or it would be green rack case with black tolex cab.

Another thing, I don't hate how the Peavey looks, I am just weird about matching gear. I love the old school aluminum side stripe on the old peavey cabs, this one has got them with no grill cloth issues at all.

For those voting for duratex, anyone have experience with how well it applies to Particle board?

Are you sure it's particle board? I thought old PV cabs were plywood. Anyway, use a heat gun and peel the tolex back parallel to the wood. It should come off without much trouble.

Why LF???? Will you have a midrange driver? No?
You're gonna want one with the 3015LF. A standard 3015 would be much better for full-range.

totally agreed. the 3015lf is designed for use with a crossover into a mid driver. use it with a tweeter or by itself and all you'll get is lows and just a little bit of upper mid.

If it's made of particle board it's worthless IMO, not worth refinishing or reloading.

The wood appears to be solid and not particle board. I was going by something I read here but this cab is nice.

There was a thread I read here (using the search) that suggested that the 3015lf would be the best replacement beating out Betas and Carvins for the exact same cab I have. But, why would someone put expensive speakers in a budget type cab was the main negative comment.

I think I remember that thread.
You ever order a dozen raw oysters and the first one you eat is a BADDDD ONE? YUK!!
Well, I think that's what you got when picking that thread for advice.......

I don't have the specs in front of me but, the LF series has extended low end, but gives up a good bit of top end to the 3015. The LF truly is designed for use with another driver in the mid-range. Who knows though, you may love it!

BTW, I'm from the Gulf Coast, hence the oyster reference. They're not so bad now that you can wash the oil off before eating. (B.P.'s oil that is!)

i got no idea who would have suggested that, but it certainly wouldn't have been anyone who knows what both speakers do.
