I've got an old Peavey 2x15 but the grill is stuffed, its bent. I want to put something over the speakers, as they are naked right now.
Would using 2 thing extra large flannies work? As in, does anyone know if it'll be too muffled or not. I thought it'd be funny to use flannelette |

Okay, that was way less coherent than I wanted it to be. I saw a guy with an 8x10 cab that had a grill cloth made of several irregularly shaped pieces of old concert Tshirts. They kind of looked like someone took a stack of magazines and dropped them on the floor and then copied the shapes that the magazines landed in. And there was no way that the same person had attended all of the shows involved. It had a Pink Floyd shirt from Animals and a Metallica one from Kill Em All.
They didn't even all feature the whole graphic on the front of the shirt. Most had most or all of the graphic. Some didn't. One piece even looked like the tour date list from the back of the shirt.
It was pretty awesome, but definitely labor intensive to make.

You can either buy the proper grill cloth or get a metal grill made for your cab. Or you can buy those grills that only cover the speaker. In fact thats probably what I would do.

If you want to do it anyway, tape the cloth over the speakers first and see what it does to the sound both close up and farther back at medium to loud volume first. It would be akin to draping a blanket over your speakers, the thicker the blanket or the more dense the cloth weave, the more muffled. |

But then again it was only at club volume. I can't speak to how much effect it might have at louder volumes. I can only speak to the 'cool' factor of it, which was excessive.

Personally, I'd go with something designed for the job. The esoteric novelty of flannel will wear off, and probably not be as impressive as you might think.
My next custom cab will have a dark oxblood covering with a cane look grill.

The t-shirt grill Bard2dbone mentioned sounds pretty sweet, might have to start on a new project....
