Fu Manchu's Bass Tone

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking to get that Fu Manchu tone, and I'm pretty sure it's an SVT rig that the guy plays through, but my question is, what other tube amps can get the same tube/overdriven tone? How would an Orange or 400+ do as far as getting their tonally?

Can you get the same tone through a solid state amp going through some type of overdrive device like the Agro, etc?

I'm basically trying to get this tone without completely overhauling what I have, but if it's going to take getting a tube head, I wouldn't mind going that route provided it's easily accessible.

Any advice would be great!

As far as I know he's always used an SVT into an 810E with a Fender Precision. That's a sound there's a lot of talk about on this site. I'm sure you could probably do a search for "getting svt sound" or something similar and find a lot of discussion on the subject. A lot of people have favorable things to say about the Tech 21 VT Bass pedal. Brad is also really easy to get a hold of and a nice guy. He's pretty easy to contact via his myspace account for Creepy Fingers (fx pedals he makes) and responds to messages. I think they also post pictures of all their gear on the band website.

I've heard that their bass player plays with a GK800RB as well and still gets that same tone, so he must use some type of pedal with that set-up.

Just email Brad. He is super nice and will probably gladly answer your questions. He builds a mean pedal too! I have owned several of them.

Brad's tone on most of their albums is simply a G&L L-2000 into a cranked SVT, so any giant tube bass amp will get you close enough.

I've seen him with both, but their website, if recent, agrees with you.

On the Eatin' Dust album, Brad told me he had the SVT and an Acoustic 360 with fuzz engaged. IMO, that's some of the best tones I think Fu Manchu has for bass on any of their albums but I'm very into that stoner/doom metal bass sound.

Everything else may be just his SVT without all the fuzz from that Acoustic 360.

I hope he finishes his prototype stomp box of the fuzz circuit from the 360 preamp because I would definitely buy that.

Straight from the source was to just get a SVT.

He said Acoustic and Sunn amps are good, but nothing is really like a SVT.

So, I guess I start my quest locating one.

In the meantime, I think I might look into a pedal of sorts like the Tech 21 VT or the Aggie Agro or Tone Hammer.
