Fuzzing speaker (not in a good way!)

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey everyone I tried searching the forums and couldn't find anything on this. I was playing through my combo amp at my bands last practice session and the guitarist had is amp cranked up pretty loud. I turned mine up to match (while running a fuzz pedal through it) and noticed that it was clipping pretty bad. I turned it back down but couldn't be heard in the mix so we called it for the day. But no since then my combo speaker (ashdown 1x15) has a constant fuzz sound without any effects running through it.

What do you guys think the problem could be? My first guess is a blown speaker but I'm not sure, it doesn't seem like it'd be a problem with the power amp but I don't know. Please help!!

Look for rips, tears or seams coming apart on the speaker cone. Push on it and listen for scraping sounds. If it has none of these it should be ok. Wire a different amp up to the speaker and wire the combo's amp up to a different speaker. Play both. Process of elimination to isolate the problem.

If you play an active bass, try a new battery. Again process of elimination one thing at a time until the bad part shows itself.

i dont use combos for that same reason. i had a old vintage trace elliot that would only work on volume settings 3 and 7. i could get it all the way up but it would sound like crap even for a punk band

I ran the head unit into my other cab and it sounds better but still has a bit of fuzz coming through. I have to go to work soon so I think I'll have to mess around with this more later I'm just glad it doesn't appear to be the new SVT cab that I bought

I just took of the front grate and i get a bit of scraping noise when I push on the outer portions of the speaker. Would this pretty well indicate that the speaker is blown?

Place your fingers like a crab around the circumference of the dome. this will allow even pressure Around the coil former. Gently push in and, if you can feel rubbing, the driver is toast. You'll have to get a suitable replacement.

This^^

Even pressure all around close in so you don't throw the coil out of line by pushing more on one side than the other. Heat can deform the coil...oval coil don't fit in round hole.
