G&L / TC / Mesa - Future Stability?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Guys,

Here's my setup:
2 G&L L-2500 Tribute Basses.
1 TC RH450 amp head.
2 Mesa Boogie Powerhouse 2x12 cabs.
No effects.

I play lead bass (sort of) in a global fusion basement groove trio in small to medium venues; acoustic guitar and organic percussion through our PA monitors, I take care of my own sound, just one PH cab for gigs. In the future I'll be wanting to let out my aggressions in a rock/blues bar band.

1 - Any words of caution or input/advice from your experience on the RH450/PH2x12 combination?

2 - Would the RH450/PH2x12s be able to provide enough rumble to compete with a Marshall half-stack and drum kit? OR would a Mesa 400+/Carbine M6 or M9 be a better substitution? Or perhaps a Sansamp RBI + QSC poweramp?

Just want to make sure I'm making the best decisions I can for future enjoyment...

Thank you for your time and thoughts!

DI

If it doesn't compete... add more cabinets. It won't be because of it's lack of trying, it will be because of not enough cabinets.

I've read some great things about the TC450.

I've read some great things about the M9.

I've heard great things from my M6/412 setup.

Used M6's run about $750? Used TC450's run about $800? Used M9's about $1000?

I think you'd be fine with the TC450, if that's the sound that you are after. Only you can make that determination...

There is something special about Mesa heads and cabs together.

If it was me, I would pay the extra $200 and grab the M9. It sounds like the M6, only with more power and bells and whistles. If I didn't get such a great deal on my M6, I would have grabbed an M9. I can't imagine needing to be louder than my M6/412, though.

No.

You need 4 of those cabs.

Maybe 6.

...it also kind of depends on what kind of tone you want. The rigs you mention sound rather different.

Hey bro, I have a RH450 and a RS212 and Rs210, and I KNOW it will keep up in any band situation. Anything louder than this, and you will need PA support. I think you will be just fine with your 2x PH212.

The future enjoyment is created by chasing your tail for years looking for that elusive perfect rig that can conquer any & all gigs possible, regardless of style of music or type of venue.

If I was in a band where you couldn't hear a RH450 through a pair of PH 2x12 cabs I'd quit.

All great points and ideas, guys. Much obliged!

I think I might save up for a Mesa 400+ for the blues/rock band and use the RH450 for my groove trio.

Best wishes for y'all,

DI

(we have a tough time classifying our band's sound...global fusion basement is a fun enough one)
