I already called Musicians Friend earlier today for a return label so I don't know if it's too late now.

they can always cancel a label.
shipping charges aren't set in motion until it's scanned.

I guess I couldn't hurt to call GK in the morning to see what they have to say. Thanks for the advice and contact info.

You could ask for an exchange for a working version of the same model.
You could exchange for the MBFusion.
You could call GK, ask for tubes, and call MF back and tell them what you're doing...

If you really loved the way it sounded, it might be worth working thru to you in the long run

I absolutely loved how it sounded when it wasn't crackling. After I had my issues I went on TB and saw a thread about the 550's motorized knobs giving someone a problem. That even gave me more worries (even though I think they are very cool). Between that and it not fitting on my vertically stacked 112's (which really isn't too big of a problem to solve) it kinda made me decide to return it. I did debate on returning it for the MB Fusion 500 , but I wanted to think things through a bit more. I will definitely call GK tomorrow and get their advice and see if they can send me some new tubes. After I talk to them I will update Musicians Friend on the situation if I decide not to send it back right away.

Be a shame to return it to get another amp that you may like but not as much. I would say a MB fusion would be nice but you like what you got. send it back for a replacement. I am sure that its not with all there fusion 550's that there is a problem. I know its not pleasurable to get a new amp only to have problems . But it happens, unfortunately. The next one I would say will work just fine.

The cool thin about GK's RB series is that you can actually retain alot of the GK tone when bypassing the pre-amp. Alot of what makes a GK tick is located in the Boost/Bi-amp section. Thats what makes them so great for me, anyway. I love the fact that one can use a standalone pre-amp and still use alot of the RB's best features. I go back and forth between just running my 700RBII 'on the rails' with just a Keeley compressor and using a VTBass with the Keeley, bypassing the pre.

Contact jason@gallien.com and we will work out a fix for you. This sounds like a bad tube, which can happen in shipping. We use the best tubes available (JJ electronics) but even those can go bad.

WAIT!

I can't believe I missed this...

Have you actually tried another amp and done immediate back/back testing?

Unless I'm missing a detail nullifying it, 90% guarantee it's the fuses on the crossover.

I had a Neo115-III I bought used that was doing this EXACT same thing, and I thought the EXACT same thing, until I swapped tweeters and it didn't help.

Here's the "test", if you have one cab that does, and another that doesn't. Pull both crossover panels out and swap the fuses (there's two in each one). If the failure follows the fuses (which it did in my case), GK can just send you some if you can't find any at an electronics dealer somewhere... there a bit odd, so Radio Shack might not carry them.

So obviously, your first question is, hey, if the fuse is blown, why does it work at all? Why does it "crackle"?

The answer is, it's NOT blown... it's a MECHANICAL failure. Some of these fuses simply have an issue with the filament attachment in the end cap, so you can't see where it's separated, but it is, and the vibration of playing through the cab literally makes/breaks that connection, making it sound like a crackle. Depending on the exact breakage, it can be pretty inconsistent, too.

Otherwise, if the fuse swap doesn't fix it, then you're simply back to contacting GK as you already were. In other words, "never mind. But man, this really sounds like the problem I had, and after swapping the fuses out, the problem is gone forever.

412 Neo arrived!

Hi All,
The big brown truck dropped off this big brown box today.
I still cant believe that I got this 412 Neo off Amazon new for $100 less than what the regular discounted/sale price of a 410 Neo goes for. I think I got the last 412 at that $600 price cause now it doesn't show up..Now they are priced at the regular $999 on Amazon. I'm also glad it was the latest version of the cab cause I thought it might have been old stock.
I know it is probably overkill for most of the venues that I will use it at but that will just give me an excuse to get a 212 MBE II cab when they finally come out next year. Right now I don't have a head for it due to having my MB Fusion 800 on pre-order....waiting...waiting...waiting...
I'm having a friend bring his GB shuttle 9.2 over to test out the cab tonight just to make sure everything is working/sounding fine.

Can I join the club please?

Trust me, it does. Especially when it opens up a bit. Mine slays every time. Love it!

Man.
If I had one, I wouldn't be moving it though.
