hey any of you guys have passive P basses with that set up mbfusion and neo 212. I only have jazz basses and kinda like the far spacing and sound of p bass....anyway I cant have 2 jazzes and no p. how do they sound with the mbfusions? I really like the feel of the deluxe basses...but I dont want active.....my deluxe jazz active passive...its not real passive. my regular passive bass sounds better in passive mode then my active passive bass in passive mode.

If I were to replace the tubes should I get a certain good brand? is there one better then another? I read somewhere these were a bitch to replace in this amp.

G-K uses JJ's but there are many brands to choose from. Sovtek, TAD, TungSol (not my favorite), Mullard, RCA, GE, Silvania......
There is no one sound or character to tube failure. It should be really clean at low volume. As you turn up the master any fault from the preamp becomes more pronounced.

Some amps have different tubes that play different roles and you can mix/match with no problems, but all three of these tubes are interacting with each other in the preamp, so I strongly recommend identical models. |

I can get a wonderful clean a touch dirty slight tubey sound at low or normal volume I mean it sounds great. weird I cant dial anything in loud other then close to a speaker fart. I guess I am just going to see if whoever I find can bench test it and maybe just replace the tubes. they are almost a year old. they guy I bought it from said he just couldnt get close to the sound he wanted....and I think thats the sound I want! lol so he might have had the problem too. this is the first time I have ever put it up loud so it could have come like this.....again low volume sounds perfect. I know with other amps when you are crossing the line.....and this one is crossing the line way too early.
on a side note I love bidding $14 on $40 strings I am dying to try on ebay and winning!

They handle the following duties:
The first one takes the input signal straight to the DI when the DI is set to "pre" mode.
The second one drives the Contour circuit.
The third tube stage is an initial gain stage following the first two.
The fourth tube stage drives the High Mid and Deep controls.
The fifth stage drives the Low Mid.
The sixth and final stage handles the Treble and Bass controls, and also feeds the DI when set to "post." This output also feeds the tuner and effects loop send.
FWIW, all of this is discussed in Tom Lees' technical review of the Fusion 550 from BGM issue #3.
That all being said, I think that mixing and matching preamp tubes might be fine, but it is worth knowing what all those valve stages do, and I can see where just using one type of tube might take some of the guesswork out of the equation. |

Multistage preamp, with the various tubes driving the input stage, the EQ and then effects like the contour or VLE, etc. Mesa adds that 'MOSFET tube driver' very late in the signal chain. Cool stuff!

| | | | First time out with the 412 neo this weekend, couldnt be much happier. All the reasons I gave up on the 410 for were solved with this thing. The big size of the cab is very much a non issue compared to the 410 since it takes up the same footprint anyway and is easier to roll around with the tiltback. In and out of the back of the truck was an easy one person task. Getting it in the cab would be a bit awkward by myself but it could be done. Well worth the purchase imo. |
