Gallien Krueger Combo is distorting?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all,

I have a Gallien Krueger 700RB II 2x10 combo and am very happy with it. I always have the -14db pad turned on all the time because I have no need for big volumes for the gigs I do. I usually just play bar gigs and never even turn it up to 9 o clock.

So was playing a bigger gig last night and had to turn it up I'd say to about 9 o clock maybe a bit more. Not even close to 12 o clock and it was farting out on the lower notes. Really distorting like I was pushing it too hard but I had EQ pretty much flat. Any ideas what's up here? I was afraid one of the cones would blow or something!

Thanks
Mike

The problem was that you were trying to get loud stage volume with a 2x10. The people who are happy with small cabs on big gigs tend to be relying heavily on PA support for the actual "loudness". Most typical 2x10's will fart out when you try to get rock-band-loud with it by itself. There may be a few exceptions, cabs that are specifically designed for efficiency, or specifically designed not to fart out, but they are not what you'll find in a typical combo amp.

Well we had no monitors so that's why I wanted stage loudness. I didn't realise that. Pretty disappointing really.

Yes, volume means more speakers are needed, a 2x10 will never do on it's own,.

Use to have a 700 rb 210 combo and yeah farting out was an issue when it came to trying to power a gig without pa support...they are great for practice and small stuff but if you have no P.A...they suck..lol.... that one reason i dont use anything smaller the a 410 and most the time i use an 810...cause some of the pa's are really small or they sound guys does not have a clue how to run it!! I like knowing i have enough to power a gig esp if i am not able t get PA support!!
