Hi,
Gallien Krueger Goldline 500 Bass Head...
Is this head any good? Heard that GKs have sketchy history with cutting out etc...

not familiar with any gk heads being notorious for cutting out. usually they're very reliable. anyway, i'm pretty impressed with the cheap line of gk heads. they sound pretty much like their more expensive counterparts. the cheaper cabs...not so much. but the cheaper heads rock.

I'm very familiar with GK heads "cutting out." Below is a comment I made in another thread. Doesn't apply necessarily to Goldlines, but still...

I've owned a 1001 GK head for a quite a while. It's the older version of the RB. Sounds WONDERFUL. When it works!

It's been in the shop three times including this very moment. One of those was a return to GK. This sucks and I've heard this from other 1001 users. I don't know about the RB version, but it would be worth further checking on the quality of the Goldline.

I have yet to play one... but I'd use the old adage: You get what you pay for...

And that GK has decided to call their cheapest gear "Gold Line" is just a bit annoying to me... And I'm a GK fan (I own and use an old 400RB as a backup)

The 1001 was a GK flop. Yes there were actual problems with that head and it wasn't just user failure. But that's pretty much the only head they've ever had like that. Some might cite the 2000rb as being problematic but remember that GK fixed them for free even if you didn't have warranty for a certain period of time. They really made a comeback with the new RB series.

I have owned and used the Goldline. It kicks butt. Enough said. Don't get a skimpy cab or you won't get the best out of that head. It's amazing despite being the "budget" GK head.

Some would say the MB2-500 was problematic. I also suspect the BL600 is not as reliable as Bob Gallien seems to think. I would be hesitant to send an amp in for repair that is worth $150. I would guess there are a lot of broken BL600s sitting in the backs of closets, on shelves in the garage and collecting dust in basements.

seeing as it's the same price as the mb500... just get the mb500!! much lighter, and it's a beast.

As I have said many time before and i am sure many times to come... I have been using a verity of GK Heads for the past 12 years ...ie... the 700rb,800rb,1001rb I and II.... And have never had any trouble with them always have given me 100% every time i plug into them. That being said i am sure there are some lemons out there like with anything you are never going to find a company thats does not have some troubles some were with something... But for the most part GK is very reliable and a very good at standing by there products and doing what ever they can to fix any troubles that might pop up from time to time. All The Best, Cheers Mate!!~Elliot
