Gallien Krueger - good for metal ?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi, I'm buying a new amp because I need a better sound. I have a 35W amp. Here's the web page of the music store with GK amps in my country.

Amplificadores Para Bajo en Casa Libertella

Which is good for metal ? I want a solid sound like Rex Brown. I want an amp for different tones.

Thanks

GK is great for metal but keep in mind Rex plays Spector basses with picks into an Ampeg. That is his "sound".

Great amp and great cabs!
But, I feel I have to chip in here.

I'm using (for now, until I get a more powerful amp) a 700RB II which is 480W with 412 NEO and I run out of headroom. It's extremely aggressive when cranked because GK amps are voiced with aggressive mids and GK NEOS are also voiced with aggressive mids, so things get a little too much on the fart side when you crank up the amp.
If you want to power those 2 212 cabs I suggest getting a more powerful amp like 1001RB II. I trusted everyone that 700RB II is loud enough and grinds like mad, which is true but! By pairing those 2 you will lose definition on the low notes of your E string. Trust me things get very very very growly up to a point of rather unpleasant distortion, and I tried it all with the knobs. Just not enough juice for 4 of those 12'' NEO drivers.

GK’s are great for metal because of the quick attack and punchy presence. I like the idea of dual NEO 212 cabs, but for metal I would pair them with a 1001RB head (over the 800RB) for the added power and definition. I like the 800RB a lot but more for other types of music like classic rock, R+B, Blues, etc…
In front of the 1001RB head I would get a high quality distortion/overdrive unit with true bypass. One that gets the good buzz without losing the bottom end.

800RB is good for everything. Just like P basses.

Depending on how loud your "jams" are I would look at the 1-15 combo and maybe add anothe 15 cab if you need more volume. While all the other amps that have been recomended are great (I used to own a 700RB-II and 400RB) they seem geared more toward pro or semi-pro use. Now if you have lots of money, get the top-tier stuff. If you're on a budget look at a combo. Maybe put a VT pedal in front if you're trying to get an Ampeg tone as well. Good Luck.

I have seen plenty of bassists completely dominate with an 800RB. Those amps have some kind of low cut on the power amp that allows them to put out a lot more sheer volume thtn you would think by the watt rating. Not that they dont have bottom end, they just dont go to 20hz.
I would be looking at the MB500 or MB800. They price for roughly the same amount as the 800RB which is, frankly, 80's tech.
I would also look into the neo 4x10 cabs as well as the 2x12. I personally like the 2x12 better, but a lot of folks lean to the 4x10.

As far as I know metal is a lot about high volume levels so you might even look into getting a Sansamp and a reasonable priced power amp.

Gallien Krueger = VERY good for metal. Anything from the RB series would be killer. I've got a 2001RB myself. One of these days I'll get an 800RB to add to my collection.

I prefer Gallien Krueger amps and Ampeg cabinets for metal myself. I've used Ampegs tube SVT heads for all sorts of heavy stuff before and still prefer the GK.

Depending on exactly what equipment you're talking about, head and cab.
