Gallien-Krueger MB115 Tweeter Hiss

Hi Everyone,

Just got an MB115 and noticed that the tweeter makes a hissing noise when on. This is even when the gain is all the way down. It's not super loud but it is noticeable.

Is this normal?

Thanks,

Eric

Tweeters don't hiss. They reproduce hiss created by the amp. All amps hiss to some extent; with the best it's inaudible or nearly so.

Sorry, I clarified my post so hopefully it's easier to understand.

So it could just be the nature of the beast. The hiss doesn't get louder with the volume which is a plus I guess. A lot of my playing is low volume so it's probably more noticeable to me.

Thanks,

Eric

This is normal in general, and a bit worse with the GK micro heads. The combination of the very upper treble/sizzly voicing of the preamp (seems like a combination of virtually no lo pass filter at all on the top end, and an inherent boost to those super high frequencies even when the treble contol is set 'flat') results in the GK micro heads that I have played to be among the noisiest/most hissy.

Also, with some cabs (not sure about this one), the tweeters are piezo's, which have a much higher frequency response than more high end tweeters. This means that they actually are more efficient at reproducing 'hiss' than a more traditional compression driver or whatever.

Turn that attenuator down a bit below noon, and dial back the treble control just a smidge, and you should be fine.

IMO and IME.
