Gallien Krueger MB150S running without speakers

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Gallien-Krueger MB150S and love this amp for the sound and the portability. But, I have used it in combo with my very early B-15 bottom for larger gigs and found that the sound of the 12" in the GK was lost in the mix because the B-15 was so efficient. Yes, I know that I should buy the GK MBX that is recommended by the company, but what if I really need more than 150 watts? So my question is, since I like the GK pre-amp, it is really all that I need in a pre-amp, can I run the GK with the line out going to a larger power amp/speakers without a speaker load on the GK? I know that this is a big no-no for tube amps but seem to be finding conflicting reports on solid states.

Thanks in advance for the responses.

That would not be a problem.

thanks for the response. But, just one? I always like a second, third, fourth opinion if they are out there.

As the others have said, it's OK to run the GK MB150 without a speaker connected. I've done it many times.

If you like the GK sound but need more power, I'd recommend getting a GK MB500 (350 watts @ 8 ohms) and using it with the cab of your choice. A lot less hassle (and much lighter at just over 3 lbs.) than hauling around the MB150 and a power amp. Another option, a used GK 400RB head would probably sound a lot like a giant MB150 with your Ampeg B-15 cab. The 400RB is a very loud amp for its power rating and can often be found for around $200 (or less) on the used market. It would definitely give you the classic GK sound.

Make it 4, no load required to run the amp as a pre only. The MB2-500 is a good suggestion for more power, if you find you like the MB150's pre better.....you can use the effects return and you have a 3 lb 500 watt power amp.
