Gallien Krueger MB150S - a sound too dark

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello folks,
I just bought a MB150 and I've A-B tested it with my three basses.
I noticed the amp is perfect with my acoustic bass, but is very midrange based and dark sounding with my electrics, including a very high frequencies oriented old Yamaha BB1600.
The steinberger sounds absolutely muddy, and I was wondering if the cone replacemente could achieve any result.
Previous owner added an external tweeter but I don't like too much this solution.
Any idea anyone ?

Wonderful small combo, and I love it for DB and more old school tones.

It should not surprise you that a single 112 with no tweeter in a very small sealed cab would be almost all mids and very little else. That is the signature tone of those small combo's, and it is why many DBers love them... controls the 'bloom and click' automatically if you are going after a more old school DB tone.

The solution (assuming you want to keep the combo) is to add a 112 extension cab with a tweeter, for those times when you either need more volume, or a wider tone (i.e., more true low end and more upper treble).

A warning... for some reason, many of these MB150 combo's have the speaker wired 'backwards' (i.e., positive to ground and ground to positive). That is a zero issue when using it on its own, but results in the internal speaker (often) being 'out of phase' with an extension cab (i.e., the cones will be moving in opposite directions, resulting in all the bottom disappearing). Don't freak out if this happens... just switch the wires on either the combo speaker or the extension and you will be good to go!

Hope that helps.

I love this amp for everything (at least at relatively low volume levels).

I leave the "contour" and "HI boost" turned up about halfway and never touch the 4-band EQ. That seems to work great with every bass I've ever tried.

It doesn't sound like a worn speaker would cause the symptoms you describe (I'm no expert but I usually associate a fried speaker with farting out). An incorrect replacement might mess with the response.
