Gallien Krueger MB500 noisy?

Sign in to disble this ad
Had a MB2-500 forever, sold it, now recently bought a mint one here on TB. The thing is noisy. Hiss city. All settings straight up, major hiss coming from 3 different cabinets, all with the tweeter level at noon, which is how I always keep them. Compared to my RH450, it's at least twice as hissy.

That's with the mute ON by the way, no guitar even plugged in.

Are they all like that now? I sure don't recall my old A02 MB2 doing that?

Should I see if I can send it in for a checkup?

I would send it in to have it looked at. My new mb fusion micro is super quiet and i would expect more noise from it having tubes in the pre amp.

I have a new MB500 with which I'm just now becoming well acquainted. It does generate noise in extreme settings on the Boost control, but not in any other mode that I've noticed. Even then, turning down the treble & high mids tames that quite a bit.

I'd have yours checked out, if I were you...

Yeah, I decided it wasn't any noisier than any other amp. For some reason the small room I'm in seems to amplify the hiss a bit. Move to another room and it's normal.

IMO - Yes. Not as much for the hiss but for the fact that the A07 is so darned good. IMO - that is the version you want.

I'm waiting for my new cabinet to arrive before judging, but I can tell you that I'm not too happy with the S/N ratio of the instrument or direct outs. If I hear the same ratio through the cab, I may send or bring it in to GK for repair.

Eww. I spent some time with that old version when they first came out and hated it. It was really noisy, and out-of-control boomy.
