Gallien Krueger Neo 112/700RB Combo

Sign in to disble this ad
Love to hear from people who have used these combos.

Thoughts ?

Happy, Not Happy ?

Can the 112 handle the power the 700RB has on offer.

Does it sound harsh or boxy?

How does it go with a B string.

I'd be mainly using it for stage monitoring for myself and to a less extent the drummer who isn't a loud player. volume levels are pretty controlled and not crazy LOUD.

Is there a better alternative in a similar price range ?

Thanks.

I have a Neo212 and 700RB-II. It's great and loud and sounds awesome.

700RBII is a lot of firepower for a single 12. The head is rated for 320W into 8 ohms. Not sure of rating of the Neo 112, but suspect it's nominally compatible spec wise, but I'd think twice about going too far beyond 12 on the master.

The 700RB can take a lot of input signal before clipping, which would be a large concern if you are lighting up the clip light in routine play due to pre-amps, effects, etc.

Take it easy.

I don't play the combo version, but I regularly gig the head and GK Neo 112 cab....... I love it!!! My band's stage volume does not get out of hand, so it handles it all quite well. In smaller clubs, I get away with no PA support.

If possible, I'd get the cab and head separately...... you can add another 112, or even a 212 later. I have a 112 and the 212, and I've got pretty much everything we do covered...... But all of that said, the 112 gets the nod most of the time. The 212 goes when we're a bit more spread out on stage. Both cabs hooked up to the 700rbII is a beautiful thing!!!

I can't comment on how it handles the B, because I'm a 4 stringer.... but I do a lot hipshotted down to D, and it handles that without a trace of problem.

Like ljazz, I have it in head/cab format, and I use it regularly for gigs in small clubs. I do have a second Neo112 cab, but haven't played a large enough venue to need it. It's a fantastic rig, with lots of depth, flexibility, and full-range clarity. I'm obviously biased, but I rarely hear rigs that provide such great, all-purpose tone. Want some grit? Crank the "boost" control. Want a modern slap tone? Use the "contour" control. Want old-school? Turn off the tweeter, add some boost, dial down the treble on your bass, and maybe even cut the bass on the head to emphasize low mids. It all works.

Others have been impressed too. It's generated more compliments than any other gear I have from studio owners, other players, etc. One of my friends used it recently, and was blown away. He called it "responsive," which is a good description. (He played it in a medium-sized venue, and probably could have used the second cab, but it sounded fine anyway.)

And yes, it handles a B string just fine. The head has a setting for "5+" string basses, and loads of headroom, so it works great. Add a little compression, and it would be even better, especially as the volume rises.

I like this combo a lot. As previously mentioned, I'd be careful how hard you drive the single Neo112 with the 700RB-II. Used with some level of caution/reason, it should be great. I will also second (third?) the 700RB-II/Neo212 pairing, and add that driving both the Neo212 and Neo112 with the 700RB-II is an amazing rig. It really blew me away.

Tom.

+1
I bought a Neo 112 & 700RB II in 2007, but found the cab not quite stout enough as a standalone. Very good tone though.

Tom; How would you compare the G-K Neo 212 to a GB Neox 212T?

The GK is a bit more aggressive and clear, and the Genz-Benz is a bit more full, warm, and smooth, but they do cover a lot of the same ground. I like them both.

I've also tried the Genz-Benz, and I completely agree.
