GAS For new amp...

Sign in to disble this ad
So here I go

I am Gassin hard to get a new amp, I hope you guys would give me enough advice to make me happy

First of all I'd like to specify my needs..

1. Music I play - vintage jazzrock funk fusion
2. I play Flatwound strings on Jazz bass, therefore single 15 inch with adjustable horn would be warmly welcomed
3. We play in a power-trio setup. The drummer is pretty much intelligent, so we do not need to crank our amps all the way up. The guitarplayer has a very loud all-tube Marshall JTM-65 Combo amp with 3 10 inch speakers. Propably a Hammond player would join us soon.
4. I want the gear to be easy to carry as my spine does not tolerate a lot of kilograms.
5. I'd rather play something thumpy and funky than EBS modern thing...
6. I want to have no problems with hearing myself when we practice but at the same time I want the gear to be stage-compatible - I mean I want it not only to sound good but also be loud enough and good looking
7. Possibilities of Upgrade would be warmly welcomed.
8. My perfect sound, 'holy grail' of bass amps is Ampeg B-15

Currently I am using 75 Watts Line6 LowDown110 which is enough for rehearsals, but when there's no PA in the club it may be not enough for bigger venues. I have always dreamt of Ampegs. My budget...Well, I'm from Poland, and my budget is about 2600PLN, which is around 960 dollars (this is a price for Portaflex Ampeg in Poland ). I'd like to get my gear in Poland, because the customs are very much a pain in the ass and you have to pay additional tax for gear you import from the US and so on.

The gear I thought of Purchasing:

Ampeg B100R - Circa 1700PLN, 100W, 1x15 + Horn, looks pretty much like B-15. Unfortunately B200R is not available anymore (as a new item) and it would be the best solution.

Ampeg BA115 - 15'', 100W 1300PLN
Ampeg BA115HP - As above, but it has 220Watts and costs around 2300PLN
What I thought of most is:
Portaflex PF-350 + PF115 - Circa 2600PLN

And some alternatives I also consider:

Kombo basowe - PEAVEY Tour TKO 115 - Sklep muzyczny Rock'n'Roll

Kombo basowe - Marshall MB4410 - Sklep muzyczny Rock'n'Roll

wzmacniacz basowy -WYPRZEDA

The higher the price, the later I'll get the gear. I don't know if I find a buyer for a Lowdown to get extra money. Moreover I'd like to have something to play at home. Trace-Eliott is a bit to rockish I suppose. What is your advice?

I'd go B100R or PF350 + PF115HE out of those choices. I'd also consider the Micro VR + SVT 210AV. Believe it or not, if you give it a little bass boost, you can get pretty darn convincing B-15-ish tones out of it. Plus since Ampeg put out the Portaflex stuff, you can often find sales on the Micro VR and 210AV. The other stuff you listed is fine stuff, but it sounds like you want Ampeg to me.

I am a bit skeptic about 210 cabs.

Can you get enough low end from that?
