Gassing for a 2x15... but which one?

Sign in to disble this ad
So, lately, for some reason or another, maybe just wanting a bigass cab or something, I've been craving a 2x15. There don't actually seem to be very many of them around, though.

What I want is something tight and punchy sounding. I don't need a whole helluva lot of low end, I'd prefer something with lots of growly mids, though still very warm sounding.

Anyway, what do people recommend, based on that? Also, are there any sealed 2x15's out there or are basically all of them ported?

Tight and punchy sounds like you want two Schroeder 15L+ cabs, or a BMF 215. From what I've read ( pm Kjung ), and heard,( I owned one for awhile ), the 15L+ is all that and more. The BMF uses the same woofers.

Checkout the classifieds here. I see the 15L+ listed here once in awhile.

The Fender 215pro is a great bass cab (4 ohms 800 watts) . Its built to last and Its not cheap new ($999), I doubt you'll find many in the used dept.

Mesa Deisel 215's are among the best sounding 215's anywhere, and for whatever reason, they can be had used for around $400. A bargain at twice the price. They are a tad on the heavy side, but it's a 215, right?

Bergantino is the best 2x15 I've ever heard. Ed Butler 3 brings one to the MN GTG's and we all seem to end up there by the end of the night.

I had an old Sunn 2x15 that was quite nice. They pop up from time to time on the used market.

+1. My favorite biga$$ cab ever. The castors make it pretty easy to lug, and their sound signature is great for punching through on big stages or filling a medium club. I think the strong low mids from 2x15's help the stage sound mix nicely with a lot of biamped PA's that seem to have a response dip in that frequency range (200-500)...

Last week-end I traded a empty road case even-up for a Peavey 215 Black Widow cabinet that's in pretty good condition considering the age.
Everything works, everythings still there.
With my G.K. MB-500 it's LOUD!!!
It's gonna be my, "park it at rehearsal cab."

I used to use a Trace Elliot 2x15 which is ported, and was saving up for the sealed Bergantino NV 215, but after finding and hearing an Epifani T-215UL (ported), I fell in love. If you can find one, GET IT!

Peavey(215D-BW), SWR, and Trace Elliot all made good 215s that can be had cheap in the right circumstance... Any of the Sunns will probably need driver replacements - if it hasn't been done already - then, it's not such a good deal... Older Mesa 215s can be had for a good deal sometimes, and are nice cabs...

I forgot to add...I'm throughly convinced there's atleast four car batteries in the bottom of this Peavey 215 cabinet!!! HEAVY!!!
When it's gig time my "two" 210 Avatar Neo cabs will get the job.

Either wait for an old Sunn 2x15 to pop up, cause they are worth waiting for, or build yourself a Sunn 2x15 style cab. The older ones are huge (48x30x15), but awesome!

That'd actually be my recommendation too. I got mine for free, along with the Mark IV head, and its loud and middy.

They're awesome cabs, and dirt cheap.

I tried the Schroeder 1515+L at NAMM last year and it was amazing. I'm guessing that the BMF215 is just as good. And the both weigh nothing.
