Is a Gator 3U Shallow an upgrade for me?

I'm using a battered old SKB 3U shallow x-rack for my GK700RBIIB, and it works fine but for the endlessly annoying twist-on/off rear panel (one tab broke and the panel was promptly replaced by SKB, thankfully). I also have trouble with the lower edge interfering with my connections. I've been looking at a 3U Gator shallow, as they look well-made and have a real detatchable rear cover but have heard horror stories about the latches rattling or being generally loose; also see that they look wider and heavier. I like the more streamlined 2U, but some say the 3is better for ventilation, as the GK fan is on top. Any suggestions from rack-users out there? The 3U SKB ATA is more than I'd like to spend at the moment.

I've been using the shallow Gator 3u rack with my 700RB II for the past year and a half and its been faultless.

I transport and carry all my own gear so its not getting thrown into vans or anything so I can't comment how it holds up to abuse but mine has been fine.

The only silly thing about them is that the latches are on the rack instead of on the lid like the SKB ones but mine have never rattled while playing.

I've just sold my amp and selling the rack separately but I'm the UK so it wouldn't really be feasible to sell you it

Those x-racks suck for real gigging use. I have one that I use to hold recording gear that doesn't get moved frequently and not in a gigging situation, and that's fine.

My first choice for a plastic rack is the 'standard' SKB with fully latched front and back lids. I think the gator is a step in between the two SKB types.

I searched and searched for a shallow, 10" rack for my Carvin BX 1500, but could'nt find anything in the plastic molded variety that size, except the crappy SKB, so I finally settled on this :
OSP Elite Core 3-Space ATA 10" Deep Effects Flight Rack Case | eBay

A bit heavier ( 13 lbs ) than the molded variety, but built like a tank. The lids both have zippered compartments for cables. Funny, I have an older SKB case that has a 14" depth, but I don't see them anymore on their site.

That's a lot of left over space, but really looks nice. I have a vented space plate I could use; wondering if the 2U would be too tight a fit.

Just ordered the 3U Gator Shallow. Better to have an extra space than worry about it. It gets pretty hot here in SW FL.

I think you'll find that case to be just fine. i kept my 700RBII in one for several years.......No latch rattle problem at all.
I've heard several users say no heat issue with the 2u version too. I once considered getting the 2u and drilling some small vent holes in the indented GATOR logo on top. A piece of mesh screen could also be glued on the inside to keep trash from falling in.
Just a couple of ideas.
