Gausse 15 inch fuzzing

I recently installed a 15" Gausse speaker that had been sitting in storage into my Peavey TNT: the speaker sounds like a Big Muff. Upon physical examination, the speaker apears to be fine with no tears or ripps, et c.
Does anyone have a clue as to what the problem might be? or is it time for the dumpster? Thank you for your help.

You can't always "see" what is wrong with a speaker. I bet the voice coil is either fried or the connections have come apart at the dustcap. Use an ohm meter and set it to the circuit testing mode, i.e. it beeps when the circuit is complete. Now, hold each probe to a terminal (+ and -) and push down on the cone. If the circuit is broken, or breaks in and out when you do this the voice coil is more than likely fried or something is not connecting properly.

I think that you can have the driver re-coned if it's bad. It could well be that the driver is simply not suitable for the cabinet you installed it into. They have to work together for good results.

Take the gauss driver out of the cab and see if by mounting it you are distorting the basket somehow, does it play clean out of the cab if so refit it making sure its evenly tensioned.
These great old drivers have a very tight voice coil gap and a dual spider suspension to try to keep the voice coil centered.
You can feel if the voice coil is touching the magnet gap by moving the cone back and forth gently by hand there should be no scratching if there is take it to a re-cone shop.
Not a dumpster because that driver will be up to and maybe beyond the spec the legendary JBL K140 especially in the low bass and it is an utterly great sound when working properly in a suitable cab.
