Which GB 2x12?

Sign in to disble this ad
I was considering maybe one of the Genz Benz 2x12's for a second more portable rig.
Which one to get? The Neox212 or the Uber bass 212? Either way I'm having an issue with the thought of paying either $899 for the Neo or $1039 for the Uber. Those being new prices ofcourse. The Uber is my choice thus far IF I were going to buy a new one. But I'de like to hear from anyone who has used either.
I'm thinking initially though I would either buy a used one or a different 2x12 all together.

I looooove my uber 212. I was able to get mine for a little over 800. That mofo is punchy as can be. I use in conjunction with an uber410 for larger shows and used it by itself for a smaller restaurant gig this week and it was dreamy.

The NEOX-212T is no slouch either. Plenty of rumble to be dialed in if you want it and it gets snappy and bright if you want that. IMO the Uber can get a little "rounder" sound, but not by much. And the NEOX is significantly lighter too

$800 for an Uber is alot easier to swallow than $1000+.
I was thinking if I really liked it I would get a second one.

You are not considering cabs from any other company?

Yes actually. This is still in the idea phase of even doing it. Its also pending my job going back full time. So its a ways off.
But I was also looking into Bergantino. I peeked at Epifani. Theres always Avatar. I know there are a ton out there. But the Berg which is even more $$ I know, and the GB have gotten the most favorable reviews and seem at least to my eyes to be the creme de la creme in this area.

All mentioned are very capable cabs.
If you are building this second rig for portability,
then I assumed weight will be a major concern?

The GB Neox, and the Berg AE are both in the 50 lb. range;
and both are rectangular rather square,
which makes them easier to handle IMO

You never mentioned what kinda tone you are after
FWIW, I like how the Uber212 sound the best
I like a full, low mid orientated profile

BTW, there is also the BareFace Super12 (212)
but I haven't heard that one myself either

ledyard, I think you(and your back)would be happy with the Neox212. I just played one with a shuttle9.0, and was shocked at its awesome performance. You could go Uber, but you seriously owe it to yourself(and your back) to try the Neo. Also, you did say you were looking to make a more "portable" rig, and I feel this'll do ya good.

Haven't played an Uber so I cannot compare, but some of the non sonic pros to the neox are it's height (vertical speakers better for hearing yourself with), lightweight, easy to maneuver (I stand next to it when rolling it on the wheels so no probs on the back), and also with the dimensions it slides easily into, and out of, the back seat of my car.

plus you can get one used for a great price, somewhere in the $500 neighborhood, give or take.

I have been using the Shuttle 6.0 and NeoX212 for a couple years now. The set up ended my search for anything else. (G.A.S. excluded) I also use the cabinet with my 50 watt tube head and my new GK mb200. I am not a nitpicky sound geek, so I can't really comment on the minute intriquises of sound reproduction. But, I can say it sounds snappy and tight, or full and round or 50 watts worth of tube goo depending on what you want it to sound like......and it's esay to move. I have played at county fairs and had the sound man tell me to turn my stage volume down at soundcheck a number of times. I have pushed it hard at large outdoor events and used it at small country club gigs. It's a do all, sound anyway you want it to cabinet. But, like I said...Hz, lows, spl values...etc....it's all a mystery to me. I use it in real world situations and it has never been lacking for anything. I hope that helps you in some way.

I've not tried either GB 212 but I'd think the advantage of going with a 212 instead of a 410 would be to try and save weight, which thus favors the neo 212. Otherwise, if you're going uber why not go all the way and get an uber 410?

I'm sure either way you go is a good choice, however. GB doesn't make a bad cabinet.

The GB Uber 212 I've owned for 2.5 yrs, and will keep forever, replaced a set of mesa Powerhouse cabs (410/210/115), AND an Epifani UL212. To my ears, it gives the best of both worlds, old school fat and modern punchy- and cuts through a dense mix with class. I did not care for the NeoX 212 near as much, although I did like it's vertical array. The NeoX was more like the Epifani cab, and, again, to my ears, lacked the character and warmth of the Uber.

Well, weighing less is a plus for a second rig. But 50-60 lbs for a cab is going to be alot more portable to me than my 150 lb Mesa cab. Sound wise...I play in an old school hard rock origional band right now. Tone wise think of two elements, 1967-1975 tone and also Geezer Butler tones. I would use it possibly for metal, possibly for a Jazz/prog/heavy/improv-ish instrumental trio thing I'm pondering putting together. Which is why I'm also pondering the new GB Streamliner.
I had an olderlate 90's i think or early 2000's peavey 4x12 bass cab. I wish I never sold it. It was SICK!!.. and you CANT find them anymore. All 160 lbs of it
Call me shallow but looks matter alot and the Uber (along with the berg) are the definate standouts. I'de like to find a used uber. I'de maybe even trade My road ready PH1000 for a pair of UBER's.
I dont want anything to do with a 4x10 or 2x10. If i'm going 10's then I'm going 8x10 which defeats this purpose.
My band is getting bigger slowly. If we get some full time roadies then I wont care about moving gear and I'll get a pair of full size mesa cabs.
But again.... this is about a 2nd and portable (fits in my 98 camry) rig. I dont care if it takes the trunk and the back seat. But if I can fit a head and one (maybe 2) cabs and one or two basses I'll be happy.

This is the kind of thing I want to hear.
