general question about power amp

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,

I am getting a power amplify for my Ampeg SVT but don't want to spent too much money at this time for the power amps. I saw that you can get power amps for PA at resonable price whilst for bass guitar is much more.

I wonder if I use PA power amps for bass cab how the sound will be compare to real bass guitar amps.

Thanks,

Chalie

though I've never used a power amp for my bass rig - I see lots of guys here on TB w/ QSC rigs. They are fairly inexpensive. just out of curiosity how big are your gigs that an SVT isn't enough?

Hi,
Its a SVP Pro pre amps I am talking about. I am currently run it through SWR Supper Red Head's return signal but now I want the power amp for itself with Ampeg's rig I got.

Most people told me that PA power amp will not be a good choice and have to get one for bass guitar.

QSC is PA power amp isn't it.

Thanks,

You use the same power amp as with a PA. Just got to watch the amount of wattage you throw to your cabs.

No difference, and since I usually bridge a stereo power amp to drive my bass rig, the stereo amp IS a mono power amp for all practical purposes.

While I have never bridged and run mine with a cabinet on each channel and the amp set to run in parallel.

One more thing guys,

When you series the channel, will it change the impidance (less or more).
Is it necessery to find a 2 ohms amps for multi cabs or 4 ohms is good.

Thanks,

I have a pair of 8 ohm cabs that make a 4 ohm load when I use them together and my power amp needs a minimum of 4 ohms when it's bridged. That works fine for me. If your current cab setup can't configure any lower than 4 ohms, you ought to be fine with just about anything.

A good number of power amps also run at 2 ohms, but many do that in stereo mode instead of bridged mono. Check the spec's on any power amp you might want to get to make sure it can work at whatever impedance you need.

Get ready for your sound to become gi-normous! Once you have a half decent power amp to push your sound, you'll be able to run just about any cab layout you may have now or even what you might hypothetically own in at least the near future.
