Genz Benz Combo Remedy?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey TBers,

I need advice on what to do. I have a Genz Benz N Line 200 combo that I've been for over 6 years. The speakers started barfing on me and it no longer did a great job of holding low notes for me.

I recently bought a pair of Eminence BA 102 (I believe) to swap out. Now when I play I hear an annoying and freakish clip at lower frequencies.

I believe the original speakers were 16 ohms and these Eminence speakers are 8 a piece.

How can I fix this problem?

The minimum load on the ML-200 in bridge mode is 8 ohms, therefore each driver MUST be 16 ohms as the drivers are wired in parallel. The clipping you are hearing is the protection circuit oreventing your amp from blowing up due to an illegal load.

Replacement drivers need to be 16 ohms each, and also, the BP-102 is not the ideal replacement driver as the tuning of the cabinet is not matched to the driver.

Call the factory to order proper replacement drivers.

One thing I've found with Genz replacement drivers is they're almost inevitably better and cheaper than the Eminence non-OEM replacements. Definitely the way to go.

Ok, If the program is greater than what the amplifier is rated for, will I have the same issue?

Yes, the "nominal" power rating, especially the "program" rating means very little in context of bass amplification.

Too true. If you are very lucky, the program rating is what the amp will put out for 8.33 ms before exploding.

I was referring to speaker ratings specifically.

Sorry, should have been "what the speaker will take for 8.33 ms..."
