Genz-Benz head+cab advice

Sign in to disble this ad
hi all, fairly new to this forum , but been reading through the site hours on end , and im glad this forum exists. i have my own band, just for fun sakes and we jam normally in my studio. never do gigs. just for fun. we play classic to modern rock .
well, i play a fender J-bass, and currently looking to acquire a set of head and cab.

i recently found a GB shuttle 3.0 head and GB STL-12T for cheap and have a few things to ask before i empty my pockets.

in my own rehearsal room environment, about 20feet x 22feet, sound treated, do you guys think the STL 12-T would give sufficient lows ? or should i get a 15inch? im planning to mate it to a 2x10 ASHDOWN MAG 210T DEEP . band members play through Marshall 100w tube amps with a drummer who knows how not to be too heavy handed.

any advice about the 12' or 15' GB cab(only) will be greatly appreciated.

thank you in advance.

the low end will be fine, but the volume may not be enough to hang with the 2 marshall stacks and a drummer. a 15" cab vs a 12" cab won't make it much louder. but a 15" AND a 12" cab (or two 12s)--that might be what you need. 2 speakers moving air vs. 1 speaker moving air will make the difference in volume. might as well get it with the one 12 and see how it does, then pick up a second cab if it's not enough volume...

Whatever route you choose to go two matching cabinets is always the better way. Mixing cone sizes can lead to issues that you don't want to have to deal with.

HERE YA GO: Genz Benz 12" Shuttle cab STL-12T (near mint)

I use a Genz Benz Shuttle 3.0-10T combo with my blues band for practice in a similar sized space (probably a little smaller but not much). I think it holds up pretty well. Like you, drummer who knows how to apply a gentle touch, keyboards through the PA and our guitarist plays through a Fender Twin Reverb. The little Shuttle holds it's own just fine, but I feel I need to crank the highs way back, etc. These have a low frequency boost that is actually pretty effective. BTW - I play either a Fender Jazz or Precision through it, and have made practice recordings and the bass sits well in the mix. I think Genz Benz quality is really robust and if you can find a deal on one, you probably won't regret it.

However, play it first if you can, since your ear will be a better advisor than anyone.

thank you All.

thanx TheCush for the adv. i think i'll be getting the GB STL-12T first. gauge how it sounds in the room and decide later wether i need to add a 15". and thanks BassmanPaul for the adv on matching cabs. Btw, what can happen if i did mix cabs with diffrent cone sizes, say, an ashdown 2x10 or 1x15 with the GB12"?. im new at this so i dont mind the education.

I've used ALMOST that same exact setup, except I have a Shuttle 6.0 and a 112T Neo cab with an Ashdown 210 MAG DEEP cab. It works very well. I was actually going to order a new grille for the Ashdown to match the Genz Benz grille.

I use a Shuttle 6.0 with the NEO 112 for most shows in a PA. Though certainly loud enough for a rehearsal.

I also own the 212 cab as well for outdoor stuff.
