Arrow Genz Benz Neo Pak vs. Walkabout

Sign in to disble this ad
I tried bypassing the Neo Pak pre-amp and used my Raven Labs PHA-1 for the pre section and it sounded warmer and not so hi-fi to my ears. I prefer the warmer sound. So now I'm seeking some input from folks that have owned, or at least used the Genz Neo Pak and the Mesa Walkabout Head. Over the years since the all tube Fender heads, I don't think anything else has really done it for me. The Gk RB400,iAmp 350, Demeter pre with a power amp, all sounded rather non-tubey. (not really a suprise there). Really wondering about the Walkabout. Have done searches and read plenty but wanted some current thoughts. Many thanks,John

Yes, the Walkabout is the tubiest sounding hybrid amp ever made by mankind. Check the WA mega thread.

+1 The Walkabout is much fatter and tubier sounding than the Neopack... not as modern/brite... bigger, bloomier, tubier, more organic low end.

Genz is about 6 weeks away from shipping a new amp called the Streamliner, that has a multiple tube class A preamp driving a class D/SMPS power section. That amp is, according to Genz employee posts on this site, their attempt to cop a full tube amp vibe in a high power, lightweight box.

Sounds very interesting... 600 and 900 watt versions, I think about 7 pounds or so. Front end is very simple... old school. I have one on order?

If the amp lives up to the design goal, this should be more in the ball park of the wonderful Walkabout tone... i.e., a tube/ss hybrid tone, versus the more typical ss/tube hybrid tone, if that comparison makes sense
