Here's my dilemma, and its a silly one really.... I will be going on the road shortly, and I will be running two XB3 410's. The weight savings achieved with the STLMX is negligible, as it would be racked in a 16 space case with tons of other stuff, so I really wouldn't notice the difference were it a GBE 1200.
I understand there are some sonic differences, and the EQ's are sorted differently (parametric 2-band as opposed to fixed point 3 band) but from what I understand they can be made to sound very similar, and the fixed points on the 3 bands of midrange are very very close to what I dial in on my STLMX parametric anyway.
What Im concerned with, is the performance of the power sections. Now, I'm very impressed with my STLMX 6.0 in terms of power delivery. I have formed the personal opinion that the B&O modules are the best of show in the Class-D / SMPS lightweight amps crowd.... both in terms of sheer performance, and sonic deliciousness. However, although it has been verified by at least two independent sources that the GBE1200 does not, in fact, produce its rated power at 2 ohms, owing to the high current design and components used, it IS said to produce a very visceral punch not available from the 12.0
My real question is, when comparing the STLMX 12.0 running stereo into two 4ohm 410's and the GBE1200 running bridge mono at 2ohms into same..... which will kick my ass the hardest? The secondary consideration is; I find the tube grit I get from the Tube channel on the STLMX to be just fantastic (I use a compressor in front of the amp, which allows me a very even, uniform degree of overdrive).... has anyone noticed any radical differences in tube response when comparing the STLMX to the GBE?
The possibility also exists that for certain shows, I may be running two 4 ohm XB3 810's
