Genz or Berg - opinions wanted

Hi guys,

Sold my Epi UL112s -great cabs, but too modern and mid scooped for me. So I need new cab(s). Have read lots of posts about the new Berg HD line, and also the new Genz stuff. Can't try them out where I live, so as usual I consult TB when getting new stuff. Should I get a pair of HD112s or HD210s or one of each too go with my Thunderfunk 550 amp? Or should I forget the Tfunk and get the new Shuttle 6.2 combo with extension cab in either 12s or 10s?
The Genz rig is tempting because of good reviews here and for being so light.

Any input/sharing of experince is appreciated!

Bjørnar

The new Berg stuff is full weight, so keep that in mind.

I was totally blown away by the new Shuttle 6.2 112 combo and extension cab. The new Shuttle 12 cabs will EASILY keep up with your old 112UL's, without that scooped sort of tone profile. Very lightweight, very high quality, and the revoicing of the 6.2 is simply beautiful. Nice kick back stand on the cab and the cool 'removable head' design.

Do a search on Youtube for the Ed Friedland demonstration.

And, you get the wonderful, best in category Genz service and support.

(I see you are in Norway. The EBS lightweight stuff is getting pretty good reviews also. However, if you can check out the 6.2 and updated Shuttle 112's, I think you would be quite impressed).

Thank you very much for sharing, KJung! Do you have any experience with the Tfunk amp as opposed to the Shuttle 6.2?

I gigged a TF550b for a couple years as my primary head. Very nice head... a bit compressed down low, very warm in the mids, 'soft' and smooth in the upper treble. Very articulate, VERY high quality.

The max output is about the same as the 6.2. The 6.2 is, of course, much smaller and lighter, and has a brighter upper midrange and more extended treble response than the Thunderfunk.

Many really dig the Thunderfunk with the Berg HS cabs (kind of 'vintage' voiced ceramic cabs). The new HD cabs (particularly the 10's loaded models) are quite similar to the older HS's.... warm, low mid present.

Berg and TF versus 6.2/12.... two flavors of great. The Berg/TF would have smoked the old version of the Shuttle combo (the 6/112), but the new revision has much more meat in the low end and more beefy drivers.

So, IMO, it gets down to your weight preference, and also if you are looking for more warm midrange type tone (TF) or a bit more 'modern' sort of full range (Shuttle) in a very small, lightweight format.

IMO. Again, Ed Friedland's Youtube clip on the 6.2 if very representative of what it sounded like to me when I gave it a good tryout (if you have a decent playback system on your computer).

Can't really go wrong with any of the stuff you are considering.

I have a thunderfunk 800 with Berg HT112ER and EX112ER, and I'm really happy with it. I have found GB stuff too hifi/sterile sounding for my ears.

I'm pretty sure you will be blown away by it. IMO the best small combo out there, and with the extension cab, you can do all but the loudest, largest gigs. Post up when you get it, and congratulations in advance.
