Getting a cab built

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Guys,

I was thinking of buying a Hartke 2x10 XL to add when needed to my Laney RB4 combo when needed.
On one side the 210s are out of stock here and on the other as everything else here... they are not cheap.

So I started thinking about the possibility of getting a cab built. My first idea was a 2x10 but checking speaker prices I could see that 12'' or 15''s cost almost the same as a 10" so it would be double the investment to use 2 10s.

So the question is..... How would a 12" do? Will it add some punch or it will be better to just go with a 15". The area where the 15' speaker in my Laney combo is measures: Heigh: 43cm (aprox 17 inches), width: 50cm (aprox 20inches), depth: 33cm (aprox: 13.5inches). Using the same dimensions seems I can have another 15" cab in a relatively small size.

Another thing, what would be a good speaker to use depending on the size chosen? Please let me know brand and model. Thanks in advance.

I already had a 4x10 and I dont want to go that way again. Sound was good but to bulky and heavy to carry around.

Rgds.

The problem with building a cabinet is that it has to be of a size and porting suitable for the driver(s) that is going to be installed. There is so much more to it than building a box of arbitrary size and shoving any old speaker into it. May I suggest that you download Win ISD pro (you can Google it) and learn to use it. Alternatives would be Bill fitzmaurice's website, The Eminence web site and the Fearful threads. These will give you some idea as to what is involved.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your reply. I will check on that.
However, I'm not planning to do the job myself. There are several places in my area where they put cabs together. I just want to have an idea of what speaker is a good option to use.

there's more than just selecting a speaker and cabinet builder..

I'd find your cabinet builder and play some stuff that they have already created.

Putting a random 12" speaker in a cabinet designed with a 15" is probably not a good idea.

If you want to duplicate the cab in the Laney combo, pull the speaker out and see what they use (or call Laney, if possible).

There are so many variables that go into making a speaker cabinet, the most obvious being the internal volume of the cabinet and the driver being used. Then there's internal bracing (if any) and tuning (port size, insulation, etc).

It's just not quite as simple as your thinking right now.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T GO TO DR. BASS

Or you'll never see any cabinet. Find a reputable builder.

Simplest approach: A 1x15 without tweeter. Download EV plans for a TL 606, have your builder build it, load it with an Eminence Kappalite 3015, set your combo on top and rock!

Have your builder do the Tl606 with 1/2" ply though for goodness sake. It shaves >20% off the weight of the cabinet and costs nothing. Wood's even cheaper.

I'd recommend 15/32 Arauco from Lowes for custom stuff. Cheap, strong, nice A side, and easy to work with.

Have to agree with Paul...check Bill Fitzmaurice's website for enclosures that will boggle the mind. Horn loaded, piezo arrays, you name it.

www.billfitzmaurice.com

If you're not very good with tools, you may want to contact a nearby authorized BFM builder.

Thanks guys for all the inputs.
I'm terrible with tools so definitely I'm not going to put it together. Will check this week with the shops I have here in my area and see what can be done.
I want something simple like suggested by Ibdog

Here are the plans. Originally designed for an Electrovoice speaker, but works quite well with the wonderful EM 3015 (non LF), one of the best full range fifteens you can buy.
