So i came across this cab today searching on here and it looks like the biggest cab ive ever seen. not sure of the model but its made by magnatone and its seriously a mammoth box of doom. anyone have any information about this thing? when was it made, who has used them, can you even buy them and are they even capable of handling modern amps? any info would be awesome. heres a pic:

It was a late 60s POS that sounded about as ridiculous as it looks, a failed attempt at competing with the likes of Marshall stacks.

The problem with the thing is that it could only get so loud due to the drivers available at the time. It would be left behind by something like a Fearful today.

Imagine trying to get THAT into the back seat of a Honda!

Yeah, if you also left it unplugged and behind a real bass cab.

FYI, I'm fairly certain this photo of the Magnatone was taken on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood, either in front of Voltage Guitars or Vintage Gear. You could prob look them up & give them a call if you had specific questions.

yep, they are pretty funky and IMO, useless due to the crappy drivers, of course, unless you like the look of it. i played thru one at Melody music in Hawthorne in the late 60's and a 2x15 JBL dual showman blew it away.

A guy I knew back in the late sixties had a Magnatone bass amp in his basement , the head and a 215 cabinet , where I would jam once in a while . He also had a Hagstrom solid body bass there too and with that amp and bass I got the coolest Entwhistle Live at Leeds type tone I've ever heard . This doesn't have anything to do with this thread about that cab , just that the one I played through sounded great in that basement back then .

It looks awesome but probably doesn't sound that great. Still... I wonder if you stuck some decent drivers in it, if it would be any good at a sort of Lemmy-ish sound with a cranked tube amp.

That's a little bedroom cab compared to this:

Alembic Club: Dean M and Ox Junior at NAMM

Ampeg actally made one of these back in the 70's.
