Gibson Thor Speakers

Sign in to disble this ad
I was driving to work this morning and out at the end of someones driveway was a Gibson Thor amp. I grabbed it. When I got home I opened it up and took a look. A fried set of Philips 6CA7's. I grabbed a set of EL34's (same tube) from my caddy and went to work. Got the tubes biased and the amp works but has low output, couldn't even overdrive the power tubes. Additionally the speaker, while working are in pretty poor condition as well, one is noisy and they fart out very quickly.

The circuit I am not to worried about I'll figure that out. The speakers I have no idea on what to do. I don't want to drop any real money into a set of drivers that will be overkill for the amp. Does anyone have a suggestion? I thought someone might have a pair of SVT drivers left over. I could wire them in Parallel for 16ohms.

is it a pair of tens? why not a pair of eminence kappa's?

Guessing you'll want to start from the splitter and work your way back, most of the caps will have gone as is the way with old american amps and i'd check all the resistors to see if their still in spec.

yup a pair of 8ohm tens wired in series. I was actually looking at the Jensen MOD 10-50s or the Eminence Alpha 10A's.

Back in about 1969 I owned two Gibson Thors. They were pretty low output amps as I remember, good tone but not much volume. I was thinking they had Jensen speakers in the originally, but that's just my memory of using lots of Jensen speakers back in those days.

Not the same tube!!!!!! 6CA7 has no connection to pin 8 while the EL34, true pentode that it is, has its suppressor grid (G3) brought out to pin 1. If pin 1 is not grounded or perhaps used as a tie point for other wiring, the output stage will work improperly!
