Gig Worthy Combo Amp?

Sign in to disble this ad
I play in a Neil Young Crazy Horse Tribute band. We need to be loud, and have that Crazy Horse sound. I have been using a GK 700 RB II (and Tech 21 VT pedal) with either a 4x10 and 1x15 or a 2x10 and 1x15 depending on the size of the venue and/or whether or not I am mic'd. However, we gig very regularly and I am getting tired of lugging around a rack and cabs. Can anyone recommend a combo amp that would be suitable?

I have two, both sound wonderful
Markbass 2 x 10 102P combo light, 44 lbs. sounds great
Eden Metro, not so light,78 lbs. sounds like a big amp.
Eden has become my practice amp because the MB is so convenient.

+1 on the Eden Metro, but it is heavy, quite a pain to move around. It's a great amp though, put your VT pedal to put in front to dirty up your sound- instant Crazy Horse.

If you need the 700rb and full stack you're not going to find a combo that can replace it. That said you could get a 115 combo that uses a 500 watt micro amp AND a matching 115 ext. cab. That would do it seeing as you're already limited to what your 15 can do anyway mixing it with all those 10's. Your overall sound would improve too using matched speakers. Or could do a 210 combo + 210 extension.

Holy Crap - I would love to be in a Neil / Crazy Horse cover band - I have seen Neil and the Horse about 8-10 times over the years. My son is named Neil and taking guitar lessons, he is pretty good for a little guy (going to buy him a Black les paul in a year - he will be 7). we play hey hey my my and country home with my current band.

I play thru a Markbass 121p with the 1x12 NY extension cab - 500 watts at 58 lbs total.
Sounds better than my old SVT and is earier on the back.

Since you're pretty familiar w/ GK tone.. I have to say GK MB210 w/ 210MBE..

33lbs combo and 30lbs cab! Total of 63lbs IMO that's pretty light for a 410.

I understand this conventional wisdom, but I mix my Metro with a 112 (Eden D112XLT) and it sounded good, and with a 212 (Genz Benz 212UB) and it sounds awesome. It is not a rule that mixing driver sizes *always* sounds bad.

I did play one gig w/ Metro and a Ampeg 115 and that was not a good match, the 115 was worthless. Ditto for mixing the Metro with a Hartke Transporter 115. In both of those cases unplugging the 115 made it sound better and louder. But it's just not *always* the case.

Some do blend better than others but you're still limited to what the 115 can handle. You got one speaker there having to take 1/2 the amp power while your 410 splits the other half between 4 speakers. Basically the 15 hits it's limit while the 410 could still give you more output if it wasn't held back. It may seem a lot louder due to having speakers up at ear level but out front, it's likely only a tiny bit louder than the 15+210 combination.

For my current setup, are you guys saying I would be better off with the 4x10 on its own? What do you think about stacking the 2x10 on top of the 4x10? Is that pointless?

Another note...I have heard a lot of good things about Markbass combos for the sound I am after.

I wouldn't change a thing . you wouldn't get a better sound out of a combo amp, you just have to move that stuff to get the sound you like ... IMHO
