Talking Gigging Amp Help

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys so I previously used a 100$ amp for practicing and jamming, but I blew out the speakers and could never hear myself. So now I'm looking/saving/have been looking for a new bass amp thats capable of being loud enough to not get drowned out by the other instruments and viable for small gigging venues.

My friend keeps telling me about tube amps by Orange and Ampeg, but I think those might be a little too expensive.

I have about 500-600$ to spend.

Help is greatly, greatly appreciated.

We play Indie Rock/ Folk music and I use an Ibanesz AFB200 Hollow Body Bass Guitar.

Buy used and you'll get more bang for the buck. I've used some 15" Carvin combos that have got me through a lot of gigs. Look at a Tech 21 Sansamp bass driver DI of VT pedal to help with tone and signal to the board. You didn't say what kind of music or volume levels but one 15' combo with a good signal to the board will hanle a lot of smaller gigs and practic unless you're really loud rock or metal.

General rule of thumb, *in my experience and opinion*, is minimum 350-400 watts for a giggable amp to cover a range of gigs.

In the new market that should get you a pretty decent largish combo which would work in most cases but you'll probably run into some situations where you could use an extension cab that's not in your budget at the time.

On the used market you should be able to get a good sounding 200-400 watt head and a decent 410 or 215 or maybe a combo + "cheap but good" extension cab. That should be enough to keep up with a heavy-hitting drummer and a sane guitarist who's playing through a 412 or less.......unless he's turning up a fender twin but then that takes out the "sane" part.

300 watt head for $200.00!!! Match it up with a 300 watt 4 ohm head and you are in business.
