Gigging speakers directly from the box?

Sign in to disble this ad
"probably want to install them first!"

Say I install a pair of speakers today and gig tonight.....without really playing through them.......that okay?

I won't damage them by putting some volume on them instantly will I?

Just hook up a cd player or mp3 player or whatever and let it play for a while at regular home listening volume.

There is no need to break a speaker in.

The suspension will be a little stiff at first, dropping your low end response a little. However, by the end of the gig ti will be fine.

When you buy a brand new cab the speakers are not broken in - they are loaded from the box to the cab, and shipped out.

I wish!

After work, I've got to run to the post office to pick up the speakers......run home to install them......then pack up and go to the gig. YIKES!

Great!

I figured they'd sound a little funny at first.

Oh well, no choice.

Actually you won't really notice much at all.
By the end of the gig you may notice that there is a little more low end, but nothing so significant that you'll be bummed about it when you start.
Not like you're gonna sound like you're playing out of a Marshall half stack at first and then sound like a pair of 410's by the end of the gig.

Unless you're playing in a perfect room with perfect acoustics, you're not going to notice much.

If you're rushed on the installation, there are big risks.

- finding out the connectors to the drivers are different (unless they're factory replacements);

- miswiring, especially if you have to change some connectors;

- not having the right tool, and trying to make the wrong tool work;

- slipping and putting a tool through the cone;

- not properly tightening down the drivers, resulting in an air leak.

- not taking time to test the completed installation, just in case something isn't right;

Be especially careful, which means not hurrying.

You would be far safer borrowing a cab for the gig.

I'm going from SWR stock 15" speakers to neo Kappalites.

Well, I'm thinking the SUNN 2000S will teach those speakers a thing or two about low end.

First time I'll be gigging with that too.

Thank you for posting this!

Great what not to do list!

I'll be sure to make sure what I'm doing is right, and testing it after.

At $125 a pop......you bet your butt I'm going to be careful.
....plus whether or not I have a rig to gig tonight!

There is the other caveat: The cab might not sound with different speakers than the originals. There would be no time to put the originals back in.

Do the job carefully and you'll be fine.

Well, I did some research and talked to some folks that are smart with the speakers and cabs. I was told the Kappalites will match my cab well.....but you're right.....I'm expecting a completely different sound.

I just don't have time to care right now.....as long as they work.....good enough.

One of the original speakers fried at our last gig....so I quickly ordered a pair of speakers and both will arrive today.

My M2000's ON/OFF switch isn't working either.....just ON as soon as I plug it in. Works fine, but just ON.
So new speakers, I've got to use a different amp and have a gig! !
