Giving up my ampeg svt cab for GK - will i regret it?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been gigging with an Ampeg svt 410 cab for the past several years but back pain has forced me to lighten my load. I love my Ampeg, except I miss a second cab to bring things to 4 ohms and give me some headroom, but i can't imagine adding the Ampeg 115e cab, thought i've borrowed one and it makes a thunder rig.

I'm intrigued by thes neo series cabs form gk. I'm thinking a 4x10, which 68 pounds paired with say a 1x15 or a 2x10, which are 40 pounds. I'm even thinking going with the 4 ohm 4x10 for max flexibility. I'm running a sansamp with a carvin power amp that is rated down to 2 ohms, so there shouldn't be any issues. But will I regret the change as far as sound? The gk sure sounds good in the store, and i can't hear a whole lot difference in a side by side with the new ampegs. (I have an american made one). anybody do this ampeg gk switch and tried it at a gig? Thoughts on this kind of setup? thanks

I run the Ampeg SVT for shows and use GK 700RB for practice and small room performance. I feel that the 2 brands really capture the sound that I am after.

I think the GK is likely to be a marked improvement. At least if you value clarity over mud...

Suggestion: Consider getting the GK Neo 112-II and/or 212-II cabs instead of the 2x10 and/or 4x10. Just a better design. IMHO, YMMV, etc. etc.

I wondered about the 212, maybe even having two cabs, which, while a total of 100 pounds and nearing fridge wight, are only 50 lbs each, which isn't much at all. having switched from a 2x15 cab to 4x10, i've been loving the tighter low end, so I'm a little concerned that the 12s might be a step backward in sound. although i admit i love the 12 in my old trace commando. I'm just not sure how 12s will be when 1k is pumping through it at a gig.

My guess is that the GK Neo 212-IIs would sound a little bigger than the GK 4x10, but not by much. I doubt they'd sound any less tight in the low end. Generally speaking, GK has a reputation for remaining tight at high volume. FWIW...

You better listen to them first. They might not be your thing...they weren't mine. I switched to ampeg cabs. Love GK amps though.

I've got GK Neo 212 II's and a Berg NV610. The GK's sound great, but the Berg is superior, IMO. Haven't used the Ampeg but general consensus is the Berg is similar but improved.

I highly recommend the Genz-Benz NEOX-212T. 2x12 NEO with horn 600 watts at 4ohms. Kickback casters. Less than 60 lbs. Clarity and punch for miles. Much more articulate than Ampeg and, in my view, more solidly built and higher quality than GK. Small footprint, huge sound. You can hear it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqvioIQye34

I have already made this move over a year ago and I never look back. When I do see a Ampeg rig my back reminds me of the pain.
