Gk 1001 RBII vs. direct box

Sign in to disble this ad
Ive tried to search for this, but I cant figure it out. I play a GK 1001 and always use the direct out of the amp to get to the mixer. The trouble is, I also use in ear monitors so what I hear is my bass direct. This makes it sound to Hi-Fi for me, it's a Stingray. I have tried to go post eq as well still sounds like trash. Would it help to use a direct box like the SansAmp BDDI. Any help would be appriciated as its making it miserable to play...Myke

I don't use a ton of bass in my in ears, but what I do use comes directly from the built-in DI of my 1001RBII or 400RBIII. Have you ever heard bass in your in ear monitors that you actually like? Most in ears just don't produce the bass well. Also, if you let the sound guy EQ your bass send, then the monitor send will sound different as well. It's hard to guess if you will really like a different preamp any better than what you are getting now. If you do get a sansamp or one of the other modeling/active DI's, then you are really just using a completely different preamp than a GK anyhow, so it's kinda apples and oranges. If it works though, go for it. This one is kinda going to be your personal preference.

Yeah, Ive gone from dual driver molds to triple drivers. That helped a bit. My trouble is that Im also the Lead Singer, so I need to hear just about everything. Also, Its the typical coverband, get there an hour before you play type situation. I never really get a chance to try and dial anything in. Once we start, im screwed because Im stuck to the mic. Our guitarist runs sound from the stage. Its kind of a messed up deal, I think Im going to try and get the GK to work, thats the tone I like. Do you guys go pre or post eq?

Hate bass tones coming from ear monitors, just doesn't have enough punch for my tastes.

either way it's going to sound more hi fi than not. that's because di's always have too many highs. cut everything past 5k on your bass channel. that's part of the reason sansamps are popular, because they do that for you built into the pedal.

yeah IME running a small eq/pre of some kind in your in-ear line to customize the sound in your ears is the best way. Like JimmyM said, just roll off a bit in the hights and you will be good to go...

I've personally done this with a boss eq pedal or a sansamp pedal works great too, haven't tried it with the VT but I imagine that would be sweet!
