Hey, I am looking at getting An ampeg 610 bass cab for my gk 1001rb head. The head putts out 700watts. The cab handles 600 watts. Is this a bad idea??

I'd pick a different cab - that isn't exactly one of Ampeg's best... Also, no way will that cab handle 600 watts - I used one with a 700rb-II(480 watts) for a month, and had that cab begging for mercy pretty much every time out...

I believe you mean the 1001RBII, which is a power beast.

I have some experience with that cab and found it to sound 1/2 it's size. A very poor choice IMO.

If you must have a 6x10, look into the Bergantino NV610, although I'm quite sure you'd be happy with a NV412, HS410, AE212 or even a HT112ER/EX112ER stack, which would be my choice for being a modular rig and still sounds a whole LOT better than the Ampeg's 610.

I wanted a 6x10 setup, so I got 2 GK MBE cabs with the Neo drivers, a 4x10 and a 2x10. Much easier to move around, killer sound, and I can use either cab at one time or both depending on what I need.

What about putting it through a Goliath III SR. 610 cab? It handles 1200 watts

Now you're talking - IMO, the Goliath Sr is one of the best 610s out there, and IME SWR cabs work very well with G-K heads...

It's not the cab's wattage rating, as that's almost meaningless. It's the ampeg 610 in particular, no matter it's power handling, that you're being advised against. Just fyi, spkr cabs wattage ratings are generally the point where the voice coil will melt, otherwise, having an amp with more available power than a cab is rated for is NOT a big problem.

I would go with a GK 410RBH. It handles 800 watts and has a horn. If you get the GK 4 wire speakon cable, you can run it in bi-amp mode which will give you a great full sound with a lot of punch.

I've got a 1001RB-II pushing an SWR Workingman's Tower (8x10). I let go of my Ampeg setup for my current rig and would do it again in a heartbeat. I love it! It sounds phoenominal, much cleaner than Ampeg, and will rattle your BONES. When I crank it up, stuff falls from the ceiling. No exaggeration!

That's a good pairing, also...
