The "growl" isn't in the EQ. EQ is tone controls.
The "growl" is a product of the relationship of the pre-amp and power amp, and the characteristic that comes with pushing the power amp close to its limits. Many players find it harder to achieve on the 1001 because you can rarely run it that loud. The 700RB II lends itself better.
BTW, the "growl" is more subtle than some might think. It's just a little "edge" that you may hear when pushing the amp hard. (kinda hard for me to describe

If you're looking for an overdrive type sound, try running the
gain and the
boost hot, then control overall volume with
master. Just experiment with different settings till you find what you like.
