GK 1001RB II Patch Bay problem?

Sign in to disble this ad
so i was letting a friend use my gk 1001rb II and gk 410rbh for a gig, and i set the rig up for him. i had the direct in going straight to the bass and used the patch bay for connecting an mxr m82 envelope filter. he thought he wasnt coming through enough so he moved the connection from the patch bay to the same direct line.

when i brought the rig back home however, when i connect to the patch bay and kick the pedal on, the effect is not coming through at all (only time you can hear it is if you slap the bejesus out of the bass) and have the volume turned up some (about 9 o clock on the amp and max on the instrument).

what is the problem here? i am worried because i know gk makes solid stuff so im wondering what could have gone wrong/want to know how to fix it!

All I can recommend is to clean the 1/4" inputs of the amp. I have recently been running into dirty 1/4" jacks. My output of my bass goes almost to nothing but is fine after I clean it. I have never had this issue, but recently, I have had a couple occurances. I use baby bottle brushes found in the baby bottle isle of BabysRUs...there might be better brushes out there I run it in and out for 30 seconds or so and it seems to do the trick. I haven't used any spray yet since I'm trying to locate some higher quality cleaners. At least cleaning the inputs is a first step that might save you some money if it works.

so the guy i lent it to says its not dirty inputs since its not making a fuzzing noise when i plug into it. his guess is either loose solder joints near the input or maybe the pedal? please help, i am now completely confused.

Mine doesn't make a fuzz noise either. You could see if the instrument input is loose by moving it around I guess. You should be able to plug a bass into the efx return to see if bypassing the preamp helps, but there still could be an issue with the preamp board, and the ext return still ties to the preamp board for boost and woofer/tweeter sections of the signal chain. I had a preamp board go out before. Cost me $75 for the whole board replacement. .

A filter needs to be in front of the amps input, NOT in the loop. The loop is for line level gear, NOT stomp boxes, and certainly NOT an Envelope filter.

could you go into some more detail? it was working fine when i had it in the loop. and the reasoning for doing this was because when it was in the front, there was a considerable increase in volume when i switched the pedal on.

also, could you explain line level gear? i figured since the patch bay inputs diagram went SEND > FX > RETURN that it was meant for effects pedals.

Line level gear like rackmount eq, compressors, multifx units.

Yes, line level is usually rack gear, where stomp boxes are instrument level, which would go in the amps input. Plenty of info on this, google it.

Thank you so much! Yea i double checked with GK and they basically said the same thing as well as providing input with my questions on rack levels etc. So glad that the amp isnt messed up!
