GK 1001RB210 with a 4 ohm RL118, safe?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am running a GK 1001RB210 with a Carvin RL118.

The GK manual says that the 210 cabinet is 8 ohms (2x16 ohm speakers).
The Carvin RL118 is 4 ohms.

So I got two boxes at 8 and 4 ohms.

I am currently running the RL118 from the speakon plug even though there is no tweeter so no need for biamping. the RL has a speakon input.

Also I read in the manual that I should use the 1/4 inch jacks for unbiamped speakers (or no GK speakers).

But the manual also states that the amp can run with either two 4 ohm speakers or two 8 ohm speakers.

So these are my questions:

Should I be running this 4 ohm RL118 at all with this combo?

If I can run it, should I be using the speakon output or the 1/4 inch output?

Can this amp run at 2 ohms? Is it running at just over 2 ohms when I run this configuration?

I'm sorry if this has been asked before. I couldn't find anyone else as stupid as me.

Currently the whole rig runs fine at less than half power for a classic rock bar band trio. Before i added the RL118, I was running at 75% with just the 210.

4 ohms is the minimum load that you can run on a GK1001RBII (which i believe is the same for your 1001RB210), so it wouldn't be advisable to use a 4 ohm cab with and additional cab of any impedance. if you go below 4 ohms, the amp will shut down to protect itself, or possibly just go into the protect mode immediately upon power up. the reason the 2x10's are 8 ohms is so you can run an additional 8 ohm cab , alongwith the ones built into your combo to achieve maximum output at the minimum impedance.

I agree, but then how can this amp run two 4 ohm speakers?

Which it clearly states in the 1001rb manual

Here's what I see in the manual.

External Cabinets: If using an external speaker
cabinet, connect it to the free speaker output. If you
are using two 8 ohm or one 4 ohm external cabinet
with a combo amplifi er, disconnect the internal speaker.
Be sure not to exceed the recommended speaker load
below.
Maximum Recommended Speaker Loads:
EXTERNAL TOTAL
CABINET(S) LOAD
1 x 8 ohm = 8 ohms
1 x 8 ohm = 4 ohms
1 x 4 ohm = 4 ohms
2 x 8 ohm = 4 ohms
The internal speaker load for both the 210 and 115
combos is 8 ohms. You may disconnect the internal
speakers from the back of the head if you wish to run
one 4 ohm or two 8 ohm external cabinets.

head injuries really suck. I can't comprehend anything anymore.

Thanks for reiterating. I went back and looked at the manual again.

Anyone want to trade or buy a 4 ohm 18" for and 8 ohm 18"?

Ditch the 18 and get yourself a nice 8 ohm 210. A matching GK 210 would be perfect.

Maybe, I do love the "subwoofeer" effect of the 18. It really fills everything out.

ok, I just sold the Carvin for what I bought it for ($150) (good karma follows) and pulled the trigger on a GK 115RBX.

I hope this ends all this nonsense finally.

new rig set up with the RBXII sounds like butter and weighs as much as an elephant.

Got everything set at 12 except for mids and treble which are at 10, and bass is at 2. Volume is between 9 - 11 depending on the general levels.

Anyway it sounds just wonderful and I kick myself everyday for not doing this 10 years ago. I could have been a contender!

I put better casters on it right away. Not a dig at GK at all. Good casters cost a lot and would unnecessarily drive up the cost, especially for guys who don't gig almost every day and therefore don't need them. Some three inch wheels cost me about $35 after tax. I may go with 4 inch aluminum and poly wheels that are about $10-15 each. I'm constantly rolling across pavement.
