Gk 400 rb good for recording?

Sign in to disble this ad
So I just need a decent bass head to run di with my compressor for some recordings. Im currently using an old behringer bass head which really doesn't sound that good. Some one is selling an old used Gk 400rb for $100. Sounds like a good deal to me?

First of all, $100 for a fully functioning 400RB is a very good deal. As for recording, in my experience recording from the direct out doesn't yield anything special. The magic happens when you plug it into a tweeterless cab and mic it up. Since that design dates back to the time before ubiquitous bass cab tweeters, it can be hissy once there is a place for those frequencies to go.

If the DI buffer is good they work very well.

For $100, just buy it. And I could be wrong, but I seem to remember that the direct out (1/4") on the old 400RB is post boost control, which means you can get some additional sounds to play with. Try cranking that boost and hook up a passive DI (Whirlwind IMP is good cheap option) to it. You just might like it.

The 400RB is an awesome head, great tone, and much louder than the 200w rating leads you to believe. $100 bucks is a giveaway! Just buy it. They normally sell for twice that.

OK cool yeah I think Im going to give the owner a call tomorrow. I thought the price sounded fair the only thing I was worried about was that the di on the amp is tr out at around 500 mv which is kind of low for a line lv. However i suppose that doesn't matter if it runs into an interface with a gain adjustment?
