GK 400RB- seek power cord advice

Sign in to disble this ad
Here is a question, I hope someone can help me with.

I have an original 400RB from 1989 with a permanently attached power cord that is way short- something like two to three feet long.

Can I (easily) replace the entire cord, should I splice to make it longer or should I use a heavy duty extension cord as necessary (which would essentially be always)?

Opinions...

Extension cord seems like the path of least resistance. Cheap, easy, effective.

and you will like the short cord if you ever rack it.

I did rack it in it's own 2 space rack. Why would the short cord be helpful- because I won't have too much cord to store? I find I'd rather have the longer cord- I'm going to get a nice 6 to 10 foot extension cord and it will still fit in the rack case.

the assumption was that power would be available in your rack... if you had a couple more components in there, a central power source makes sense. in that scenario, a shorter power cable takes up less room, as only a short length will ever be needed.

Thanks for clearing that up...I'm new to the world of rack mounting. The only reason I mounted the 400RB was because it is a model that has the ears permanently built in to the amp.

So I bought this case for it off eBay:

I have an old 400rb with the attached power cord. I don't understand why GK made them so dang short! My Peavey Mark VI is the same way... must be an 80's thing...

...anyways, a good ol' trusty orange extenstion cord works wonders.

fwiw I'd always like a shorter chord and extension it if needed. I hate having too much chord . . . my 2¢

I did this about 10 years ago to mine (my ex-wife's rabbit chrewed through the original)

It was dead easy to replace, but as I recall, the original chord is NOT grounded... so you either have to use a 2 prong replacement, or do what I did - take a standard computer cable, cut off the IBM female connector and just use the hot and neutral leads, leaving the ground unconnected. Works fine. I don't think I even had to solder anything... but it has been a while!
