GK 400rbIII help with Vol/Boost/Master settings

Sign in to disble this ad
Just sorting out the nuts and bolts of my new rig. Looking for some help on how to run the volume, boost and master settings.

Rig goes:

passive P/J with quarter pounders--->EBS multicomp--->400rb--->Aguilar 112

Is it generally preferable to set the master high and dial in the overall volume with the volume knob and use the boost as sort of gain control?

Thanks guys.

First, try using the gain on the multicomp like you would a variable input gain equipped head...... turn down the vol on the gk, and adjust the gain up until the clip light on the head starts lighting up..... then back it down a bit. The multicomp is a perfect match with the GK rb heads! I like tubesim mode, with the comp/limit knob at noon.

The gain structuring on the head really depends on what you're going for tonally. I like a bit of the gk growl in my tone, so I start with the master at noon, and the boost at 2-3:00. I don't like the gk preamp clipping at all, so I run with the vol knob (preamp gain) between 8 and 11 o'clock. If I need more volume than what 11:00 will give me, I'll come up on the master and back down the boost a touch (so it doesn't get too grunty).

I use a 700RBII but I believe the controls are the same(?). I find the boost, while bringing the volume up, strongly affects the tone, so I would advise playing with the position of the boost to find a sound that you like, more than adjusting for level. Just my $.02
