GK 700RB Amp head fried out...

Sign in to disble this ad
What the eff. I wake up this morning, got ready for some practice before a jam session tonight and when I turn on my amp, it sounds like complete static.

After playing around with it for a while, I've come to a few conclusions:

It's not my cabs, cables or bass. It's definitely the head. After adjusting the knobs, I've come to find it's the woofer knob. The speakers aren't blown at all, so it's a problem with the head. A tube maybe?

I run a Gallien-Krueger 700RB II with two 200w 8ohm GK MBX cabs on a bi-amp system.

On a similar note, does the order of the cabs being plugged into the head matter? The manual offers no indication, so I've been putting my horns into the left and etc., using two speakon to 1/4 cables.

When I power up with the woofer all the way off, there's no noise. No sound goes through to the amp from my bass with it all the way off, and turning it up any amount creates a loud static and popping noise but still no bass.

It was running fine last night, I powered it down no problem and this morning it's fallen to ****. Please help D:

There's no tubes in that amp and the woofer knob is the master volume. Sounds like you need to bring in and get it looked at, usually these amp are very very reliable. I would take the head to a friends or a store and just plug it into another cabinet with another cable and different bass just to make sure it is the head.
Good Luck.

Most likely a case of operator error = shop time...

The 700rb-II's owner's manual is very clear on proper speaker connections...

You say you are using the bi amp system, but you are using speak-on to 1/4 cables. I don't quite follow, I thought the only way to use GK's bi amp system is to use their 4 conductor Speak-on cables.

not only that but are these bi-amp cabs? Just because they have a speakon jack don't make them bi-amp cabinets. The RBH and NEO series are bi-amp for sure don't know about the rest. Try using just 1/4 jacks....
