GK 700RB II clip light - sensitive?

Sign in to disble this ad
I just had a gig this weekend and borrowed my gear to a bass player for a band that opened for us. He had a RockBass (I think corvette), passive bass with obviously hot pickups. So hot it clipped my input so I used the amp attenuator. It never clipped for me before when I used my pedalboard and jazz bass. Are RockBass and Warwicks so hot or is the GK input that sensitive? He also sounded like he could use a compressor because he had some fairly obvious volume differences during playing. Or he should just work on his technique I guess. Anyways, man, are those passives hot or what?

....I do have a RB Corvette $$ passive and yeah She it Quite Hot....But not to clip my Preamp.....Then again i never run my gain over 10 o'clock...and always have my -12db pad pushed in!! if i need more volume i just up the woofer master. Now that bein said i thought i was clipping once....just turned out the pickups were a lil bit to close to the strings cause them to touch and make a popping noise....but never have had my clip light come on!! It takes a lot of juice to clip that head... and GK does not recommend turning the pre amp volume past 12!!

Once I pushed the -12 pad, it stopped clipping. I don't have the pad on when I play and it never clips. Also, the preamp gain doesn't affect the input clip as far as I know, but I agree with don't go above 12.

well yes and no If the preamp gain get to high it will clip the preamp...as far as i know that light is a preamp clip light it is all kinda connected...Hot bass + high gain=Clip!!! ...and if you pushed the -14 pad in and it stopped then you have fixed it.I do know that my warwick is alot hotter then my Active basses and even with the-14db pad pushed in i do have to turn my gain down cause it is alot louder.....just the nature of the beast!!!

Nature of the beast indeed! I think the clip light is input clip, not preamp clip but someone more knowledgeable could correct me. I think you either have to lower volume on your bass or turn the input pad in to get rid of clipping. Preamp gain doesn't affect input clip afaik. Would love to find that out for certain though.

Well This is pretty much all that GK has to say about it!!..."Set The Master to 12o'oclock the gradullay increase the preamp volume control to a comfortable listening level,if the clip LED by the input jack lights while playing, engage the-14dB pad button"....Does not really give a clear answer to what the light is whether it is preamp or input...It just goes off i guess...lol Hope that helps a lil!! All The best cheers mate!!
