GK 700rb Mark II question - using non gk cabs??

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,

I'm interested in getting a 700rb II mainly because of that GK Boost control which apparently is the secret behind adding the "growl" to your tone on that amp. I notice it's in the Bi-Amp section on the front panel. I have a couple of Non GK cabinets i plan on using that can't take advantage of the GK bi amp system. however, i want to be able to use that boost control to overdrive my sound.

Does the boost work on Non GK Cabs? Can you get that GK Growl?

Thanks!

Yes, but the amp is really designed for the biampable cabs w/tweeter. I have a GK1001RBII I was using with older GK cabs and it worked fine. But I just bought a NEO cab and its really nice.

Don't sweat it. Just run it full range and you'll love it. Boost will work. Just make sure the Woofer Cut button is not engaged, and you'll have a full range signal to your cabs.

I usully keep the Woofer Cut engaged when I use my fEraful 12/6 or the Acme B2 that preceeded it. Less gank, click and other noises. Also takes the "edge" off when I'm playing distorted blues/rock "leads" in the upper registers. Pretty much the same as turning your tweeter way down.

The only time I disengage the Woofer Cut is when I'm using an old school woofer-only cab.

YMMV, of course.

That makes some sense. The Woofer Cut affects signals above 5K, so if you don't need a lot of brightness, you might not even notice the absence of those frequencies.

I use a 700rb-II with an Avatar B212 and that setup rips. TONS of growl and punch. Couldn't be happier!

To my ears (and ever-evolving tastes) "brightness" occurs in the 2K to 4K range. Most bass guitars put out little, if any, musical content above 5-6K. If I were a slap/pop or pick player, I might want some click...but I'm not. I prefer the "clack" I can get by adding a little fingernail to ghost notes with the rolloff at 5K, rather than the "click" with a higher rolloff and full range cabs.

The 5K rolloff also helps me sound more "guitar-like" when playing "guitar" solos. Think about it: Very few (if any) guitar speakers reach above 5K. The owners manual for the old MusicMan guitar amps actually bragged about having a 7K low pass filter.

Side note: Another advantage to the Woofer Cut is that I can send a post EQ signal to the board and not worry about things getting too shrill and edgy if I kick in some heavy distortion.

Sure does, and you sure can - I've had a 700rb-II for several years now, and done atleast a couple hundred gigs with one... Cabs that have sounded great with it include:

Mesa PH610, 810, and 215
SWR's Goliath Sr and Megoliath
Ampeg's SVT810e and 410HLF

It also totally kicks ass out of my Peavey 215D-BW that's Kappa LFA loaded... I mostly use a Mesa M-pulse 600 for gigging, but really don't mind using my 700rb-II, either - it's really that good...

Did anyone try one with a Goliath II?

I've never personally played one, but a buddy I knew used a 1001rb-II with a goliath (dont know if it was I, II, II or IV) and it sounded killer.

I imagine the 700rb-II would as well.

If you want super clean, go 1001rb-II
If you want grit go with the 700rb-II

By brightness i probably meant the (subtle) sizzle above 5K that some players can hear (not necessarily me!).

and;

I have played my 800RB and 700RBII through my Goliath III, and can say that it is one of the best rigs I've ever used! IMO
