Smile GK 700rbII/1001rbII + Ashdown ABH650 = ???

Hello all,

I was asked an interesting question yesterday - 'Isn't the GK 1001rbII (700w RMS) too powerful for the Ashdown ABH 650 (650w RMS, 4 ohms) cabinet?'.

I have used (primarily at the widest cross-section of my gigs) the 700rbII (480w RMS, 4 ohms) head with my Ashdown ABH 650 for quite a while now and find it as powerful/versatile/reliable as they come.

When my friend is pondering the 1001rbII model instead, I honestly hit a mental 'hmmm?' when asked.

Now, I am quite aware that the amplifier output only exceeds the speaker capability by 50w RMS - but I've never been in a position to comment on it's relevance to the suitability.
Will this amp overpower these speakers causing damage/'farting'/etc...?
Is it a suitable power range, or too much?

(Keeping in mind, the cabinet is rated at 4 ohms, using the full power of the amp)

I stood by the reccommodation of the 700rbII [as it is a great fit (to my ears) and is easier to 'hit the rails' and get the GK grunt (Flea, Duff, etc...)] in this situation - am I right in my suggestion???

All the best with your music!
JOHN.

IMO, you're exactly right on that - and will also mention that the 700rb-II is plenty powerful enough to blow drivers on many cabs... IME, the 700rb-II gets "warmer" in a more useable volume range for *most* common stage volumes - and I tend to play in very loud bands...

Don't get me wrong - the 1001rb-II is a great amp - and if you're looking for clean, clean, clean - it's one of the best, IMO... BUT, if you're looking for a little grit/grind at a volume that won't cause a ton of problems on stage - for *most* gigging musicians, I feel the 700rb-II is a better choice...

I have two of the 700rb-IIs, and I can honestly say that I wouldn't trade either one for a 1001rb-II, even though the 1001rb-II is a more expensive amp...
