GK Bundle or Ashdown Combo?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Folks

Just wondered if anyone would have an opinion to help with this.
I am looking at a small set up for small gigs and I have sort of come down to two from Thomann - (It will be by mail order, no chance of trying these in Ireland, hence looking for any opinions that you would be good enough to contribute!)

GKMB200 Bundle
Its a GKMB200 with a 210MBX cab and a 115MBX cab, both 4ohms both 200watts at 489euros

AshdownT15-250s which is a "Thomann Special" combo, 250 watts, 2 parallel speaker outputs for extensions - 279euros

I have no great need for bells and whistles on the amps, can use external boxes for sound shaping. I have no preference for separates or a combo in this case. My weapons of choice are my Fender Jazz and Precision and occasionally Yamaha TRB-5

Questions are basically, what do you think will give most/best volume levels if needed.
Portability seems about equal to me.
Would the difference in price be justified?
The Ashdown with an extension speaker...probably still lower cost and more flexibility in volume?

Anything else you would like to offer in terms of experience, opinions or advice...or alternative suggestions in this price range to get me all confused again :-)) ... would be gratefully received, so thanks in advance.

If you want to check them out, the links to Thomann's pages are below.

All The Best
Martin

I'd go GK rather than ashdown any day.

hmmm...

I might be mistaken but I don’t think you can power both of those GK cabs with the MB200 because you’ll be under the 4 ohm limit (2 ohms).
A better deal would be the GK MB200 and a single 210 or 115 (two way) cab for less money. There’s nothing wrong with two cabs though, you could leave one at rehearsal space and keep one at home, then just haul the head back and forth. I would still go for the GK if you can afford the bundle. Later you could get another MB200 and have two complete rigs (always recommended for gigging bassists).

Sorry!
That's my typo, the cabs are both 8ohms each, you would of course be right if they were both 4 ohms. (blush!)
Thanks for the replies so far folks, appreciate it!

Personally, I'd go with the GK package. I looked at it myself as I wanted an affordable rig, but then I found cheaper cabs on eBay and went from there.

If you can get that whole stack for that price, it's ideal. Thomann have great deals sometimes.

Anthony.

I used to own that Ashdown combo, and while it was a good and loud amp for that price point, it had its limitations.

It has a 15" speaker in a very small box, and no tweeter. No high end sizzle, and no real lows. IMO, a bad thing, some people like it that way Good Ashdown eq.

I sold it mainly because of weight, so many light weight options out there these days.

Many thanks for your opinions folks, much appreciated...I'm leaning towards the GK bundle myself and that seems to be the consensus so thanks a lot! :-)
